My temp gauge was acting fine.....bike was running in the first third of the gauge all the time , even just sitting idling. Then I flushed and changed the antifreeze...about two weeks went by and still everything was fine. Then one day the gauge was rising higher into the red almost for no reason. Even on the highway, in the cool of the day almost red. I never see the fan go on and it has no rhyme or reason for it. Any ideas? If it's the sender for the gauge, does anyone know of another application , like a car that works that's much cheaper? Thanks in advance! Joe

are the other guages working properly like the gas guage.....it could be the rectifier - rugulator.....on 1000s the guages work on 7 volts and when they go bad the guages go funkey ......

that might not be the problem .....make sure its not getting hot for real .....run it idling with a fan blowing on the radiator to see if its running cool and watch the guage ....sould be able to tell when the thermostat opens and closes....if the reads way up in the temp zone or pegs and you know its not hot then the regulator rectifier is probably bad .....

the fuel gauge has not worked since I bought it. See, yesterday I took it out on the highway and drove for about an hour and it ran so cool. Today, I just started it up and went to work which is about a five minute drive and it was at the red zone. I don't feel or smell the heat that it's showing . But I do know the fan is not coming on. But on highway speeds, it wouldn't matter anyway. I did read where those two gauges run on 7 volts. Where is that voltage reducer?

The 7v regulator is up in the gauge cluster area on my Interstate. I have to remove the balance weight to get to that stuff. It's a small, gold(ish) colored metal box. Neither my temp OR fuel gauges worked when I bought mine, and I thought it was the regulator/reducer. I found the wires had come un-plugged on mine.
If the temp gauge is pegging in the red, then it's possible the wire for the temp sender is shorting against a ground somewhere. If it were unplugged, or the regulator/reducer were bad, the gauge would not move at all. I'd say start looking for a wire that it touching/shorting out somewhere. You may have accidentally disturbed something in the process of flushing/refilling the cooling system.
hth

Just to be on the safe side to make sure the engine isn't actually overheating I'd check coolant level in the radiator, not just the recovery because the recovery could show full even though the radiator is low if there's a problem with the hose or pickup tube inside the recovery tank. This involves pulling the false tank off which means the seat also has to come off.

Once the radiator is full, start 'er up and observe the warming up. Assuming coolant flows are OK which they most likely are, once the gauge reads at the start of the thicker white line the top radiator hose should start getting warm. If coolant flows are good you won't be able to touch the hose for more than a second or so with temp in the red zone and should be boiling over at that point.

JOe where in AZ are you hiding out?? I saw Phoenix was 100+ so I would not assume it is just the radiator and coolant.. (I spent 4 1/2 years in lovely Sierra Vista... errrrr Fort Huachuca)...

Good point Joep, at southern AZ temp ambient temperature will have already raised the gauge some :smilie_happy:

The hottest I've been in was Yosemite, 112. In traffic it was 118 degrees at the center of my headlight where the temp sensor is so at least 118 degree air was being pulled thru the radiator. Surprised it never overheated, it never went above just over 3/4 gauge.
