I am getting ready for the Midwest meet and I have two helmets; one is open face with a snap on visor (no face shield) and the other is 3/4 with a flip up face shield but no visor. I really like using the visor to keep the sun out of my eyes with the open face helmet, but I know there is no way I will not hit rain on the way out to Joe's. The face shield on the 3/4 is scratched and needs to be replaced (scratches will not buff out at this point) and I normally use that helmet for riding in the rain. I do not want to carry two helmets for the trip since I am packing to camp and do not have the room for two helmets.

So I came across a snap on visor for the open helmet that also has a flip up shield! :clapping:

It comes in clear and smoked. I kinda like the smoked (tinted) but have never used one at night. Anyone ever use a smoked shield or have a smoke tinted windshield?

I find tinted is too dark at night, least the ones I've tried so I use a clear with sunglasses.

Makes me think I gotta decide which helmet I'm taking. Really would like to take the full face and half but that ain't gonna happen.

The helmet I got from the PO of my bike put a piece of black duct tape across the bottom of the face shield on the 3/4 helmet, used about 3/4 of the width of the tape. When the visor is up it's the perfect sun visor, perfect.

Cool idea on the tape. Just picked up this one on eBay for Dad. These are my favourite helmets ( I have 2 in large) which now come with a drop down visor in them. As I wear glasses all the time a clear visor is the only way to go for me. I can't think of the treatment but there is a gold looking finish that gives protection in sunlight but is not restrictive at night.

Gerry, you just gave us the kiss of rain by posting about the possibility of it.

For my 3/4 helmet, I ride with just my sun glasses with the visor and carry a 5 snap visor for those times when it is damp. If it is raining, I just don't use the visor. For my half helmet, I have one of these that slips under the visor.

Feel free to bring anything you can get on the airplane Dan. I've pretty much decided the trailer is going to Indiana. Both helmets are fine if you can get them here.

:smilie_happy:  Sorry Brian! But I have made this trip before (family in Ohio) and I have yet to not hit rain on the PA turnpike in the summer! (We'll be fine.)

I appreciate all the input!! :thanks:

I bought a smoked flip-up shield for my old helmet, and loved it. My new helmet has a clear shield...I much prefer the tinted one. When it got dark, I had to remove my sunglasses, but could still see fine with the tinted shield. The clear shield just doesn't have any protection from the sun at all...something I desperately need for my eyeballs. I am going to get a tinted shield for the new helmet soon. And you can certainly get the little static cling sun shields that fit across the top of the face shield, that help.

I have not heard of them. Any idea where I should like to get the static cling tint?

BTW, I forgot to report that I tried the flip up add on visor last year. It was cheap and a waste of money. Even with a windshield on my fairing, the buffeting almost pulled that visor off. It also does not seal around the sides and noise was going everywhere. I pulled it off as soon as possible!

It also causes another person to look in the mirror and proclaim "Where did Gerry get to!" when he pulls over to remove said cheap visor. :smilie_happy:
