On my 81 interstate the exhaust is about 1/2 inch below the engine, Is it safe to lift the bike with the weight on the exhaust?

Prolly best to use some short sections of 2x4, or something similar, to get the actual lift base off of the exhaust.

No, the exhaust could crush easily.
