Wandering Spiders Lead Mazda to Recall 65,000 Cars
Mar 3, 2011 – 9:41 PM

AP

WASHINGTON -- Mazda has some creepy crawly culprits in its new safety recall - spiders.

After discovering spider webs in the vents, the Japanese automaker is recalling more than 50,000 Mazda6 cars from the 2009-2010 model years in the United States and an additional 15,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

The company said Thursday a spider could weave a web in a vent connected to the fuel tank system and clog up the tank's ventilation. Pressure on the fuel tank could lead to a crack, causing fuel leakage and the risk of a fire.

Mazda said it was unaware of any fires, injuries or crashes in the vehicles.

Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes said dealers had identified 20 cases in which spider webs were found in the vents. The webs were linked to yellow sac spiders, Barnes said, but it was unclear why they were crawling into the Mazda6 rather than other vehicles.

Adding to the mystery, Barnes said the arachnoid attraction to the sporty cars - which the company has marketed with its "zoom-zoom" tagline - had no specific connection to a particular region of North America.

"Perhaps yellow sac spiders like to go zoom-zoom?" Barnes quipped.

The recall involves vehicles with V4 engines built from April 2008 to February 2010.

Owners will be notified by mid-March and told to take their vehicles to dealers for inspection and repairs. Dealers will inspect and clean up the vent line and install a spring to prevent a spider from entering the vent line.

Customers can call Mazda at (800) 222-5500.

that sounds like a plan to me.... kinda like the Toyota Gas Feed sticking.... I really never believed that either . there was a woman I think from Tn... but anyway, she said her car was going over 100 MPH , and she called her husband to say goodbye . Now WHO would believe such a story. :smilie_happy: , and like these Spiders , anywhere they could build a Web that would cause a problem in the Fuel system , there would be Gas Fumes , and I don't believe any spider would build a web in such a place . I just Don't Believe that. . . .

About 15 years ago I'd have agreed with you, then I had to fix a blocked propane hose on parent's 5th wheel. After a few hours of head scratching and testing tanks and regulators it was traced to a very short hose (about 6 inches) going from the tank switch (2 tanks but you can only use 1 at a time) to the regulator. Took a piece of wire and rammed it through and all I got was spider webbing complete with a dead spider. These days NOTHING a spider does surprises me.

well..........I reckon' anything is possable , and I'm sure you know what your talking about Flinx , but as a Mechanic for many years ( I Never saw anything like that ) ... but , I do know how Competition is in the Auto world , or anything bigtime for that matter. ... I'm old enough to remember , Studebaker , Packard , American Motors , Tucker ,........and it kinda looks fishy , I wouldn't put anything past the Big 3 . right now even after blowing enough money to put America under . they still are spending more than they are making. ............it's just looks and smells Fishy to me .

Actually It does happen on RV's...I had the problem on my trailer. After storing it for about a year when I lit the water heater I had a weak flame abd tge heater would not work properly....after inspecting the unit several times i foung a spider web in the throught of the burner which caused a lower volume of gas into the burner...cleared it with a bottel brush and WALLA it worked great..Now that is one of the things I look for before i light up any of my gas appliances.. :Egyptian: :Egyptian: :Egyptian:

Some of you guys have likely found dry dog food and other miscellaneous stuff in the air intakes and air cleaners from pack rats. I guess they would be pack rats. Nice place for a nest. I found stuff like that before. Glad nothing ever jumped out at me though. If that happened there would be two messes to clean up I'm afraid. One being the nest.
