I'm looking for a complete KNOWN GOOD 1983 1100 engine.

The key here is known good running and tight with low miles.

I have been through 3 engines with the same knock I've been chasing for over 3 years so the next engine must be known to be quiet at all rpm's with low (actual) miles.

Shipping is crazy expensive but not out of the question, in California would be preferred.

Last check I saw 3 cali motors on ebay. Not sure if any were 83 though. You may want to check with the sellers as to the condition. It's probably cheaper to replace valve springs and relocate the rockers though. At least at that point you'll have totally refurbished heads that are known flat and all within spec. Just a suggestion.

Maybe if they're local ebay I'll take a chance otherwise fergit aboot it.

I have heads and cams coming out my ears so no problem there getting 2 conditioned and probably better anyway to replace head gaskets on the new to me engine as part of the build.
Least that way I can be pretty certain the problem is not top end.

I could do up 2 heads and install to rule out top end noise but that's $100 in gaskets and since the oil pressure is low I'd rather put that into an engine with good oil pressure, low miles and quiet primary chain.

I'm not shy about installing a 1200 engine, kinda waiting on Joedrum's outcome, that's what he's doing.
It would have to be an '84 for sure.

You know I did the '83 swap and I could not be happier! As far as noise (and we have spent a lot of time there) the '83 engine I got had 48K miles on it, same oil pressure as the knocking '81, took the carbs from the '81 and installed them on the '83, same plugs, wires, coils, regulator, etc... and no noise. It was in the '81 engine and not the surrounding parts. Valve lash and weak springs....yeah, most likely...and possibly lower end bearings. I paid $99 for the engine and $275 for shipping! But for me...it was worth it!
