I need to replace the brake rotors on my Goldwing. I have been looking at different ones all over, including ebay. What year rotors will fit on the 82? Are they all the same for the GL 1100 years? According to the after market parts sellers theirs will fit interchangeably between years.

82 has its own rotors most 83 rotors are different and vented ...they can just about all be used but there is shimming involved to get them to work right ...so the answer is they interchangeable in a very hard way

Will earlier GL 1100 rotors work? How much shimming? What material used for shimming?

Some trial and error is in order to make them fit right I'm guessing. Maybe different thickness washers can be used as shims either behind the rotors on the mount bolts or possibly at the caliper mounts. I haven't read any exchanges of this kind. I hope you will do a write up of how you do this.

That is a concern. Maybe we can get some posts for the different rotors with measurements from bolt to bolt and number of them. Another concern is circumference. I believe there is some difference there also.

There are differences between the '80 through '83 front rotors. The bolt patterns are the same, but only '80 and '81 change within themselves. '82 and '83 are not the same and '80 and '81 do not fit with the '82 calipers. The '80 and '81 have the single piston caliper and the '82 and '83 have dual piston calipers.

The single and dual brake pads are also different which is where all of this is going. The '80 and '81 have solid rotors which work well with the single caliper pads which are taller and not as wide as the dual caliper pads. I had '81 solid rotors and calipers on my '82 while I was doing my restore. I cleaned up the '82 vented rotors and swapped them out from the solid '81 rotors and noticed a lot of clicking and the pad life was reduced quickly. Turns out the '81 single piston calipers and pads ride higher on the rotor and the vents were tearing up the pads. I rebuilt my '82 dual piston calipers and new pads with the '82 vented rotors and all problems went away.

There are also special vented rotors on the '82 and '83 Aspy's.
