ok, so my buddy and I took off the timing belt covers...and to my surprise, the belts are in good shape, they still have a few thousand miles left in them, good thing too because he forgot to bring them up to my place. The tension on the belts needed to be tightened but that was it.

So in his words....this is what he told me to ask all of you since he cant be sure....in his words he said

"sounds like valve tick, but intermittent. Only at idle or 3500-3800 RPM."

so since it isn't the timing belts, what do you think it could be?

That doesn't sound right....

"Coming from within the engine case, towards the rear. That's why I think it's probably the primary reduction clattering just a bit. Quite a few bikes do it when they're older."
