Hi everyone! I have quite some smoke/steam coming out from a hose underneath the engine of my Honda GL1200/1986. You can see it on the attached picture or even better on this little video. My knowledge is rather limited, but I understand it's an issue with the cooling system/radiator/water pump - the sensor on the dashboard confirms that the engine is getting too hot. Can anyone who had the same or a similar issue help me out here with a hint/explanation what to do and how to possibly fix it? Thanks guys!

Yep! Looks like that tube is from the right side exhaust. Looks like a blown head gasket to me too. Does the air smell sweet? Is the coolant level low or dropping? Check your oil if it's milky there is coolant in it. If any of that is true then time to drain oil and order head gaskets.

Check your radiator cap on the off chance it is bad and allowing the radiator to vent thru the overflow hose.

Check your spark plugs on the side that is venting. If they look steam cleaned, the head gasket is bad.

Find out why the head gasket gave up before simply replacing it. Make sure the head and the block are flat, and check for a crack in the cylinder liner. Look for antifreeze leaks elsewhere that may have let you run low on coolant and overheat the engine.

Good Luck!!

I'm pretty sure the 1100 head gaskets differ slightly from the 1200. Most prefer OEM gaskets or Vesrah brand. A top end kit is nice as it provides all the new gaskets and seals. Saving you the trouble of hunting this or that seal and O ring as you find them unusable.

I would steer clear of any head gaskets that are not Honda as you just can't be sure what you are getting. I would get these, part number 9. https://parts.southernhonda.com/a/Honda_ ... E0300.html

As for the other gaskets you can purchase after market, for the exhaust and any others that will need replaced (likely not much else other than head gaskets and exhaust gaskets)

All will be for not if you do not make certain that the heads and block are flat within spec, easy to check and reletively simple to fix.

Peruse this thread to see what you may or may not be required to do to your head depending upon how it checks out. viewtopic.php?f=23&t=10534

You are in the right place for this job. Go slow and do it right, you'll be fine

Welcome to the forum!

Vesrah makes a good gasket set at a fair price. :read: Stock ones are more than likely the the very best available, but any of the others, are not advised. :nea:

Yep, looks like mine did...I put in water pump and head gaskets as a complete noobie with the help of these guys and it worked just fine. I used a vesrah top end kit and am satisfied with the results after 2000 miles.
