my speedo started growling last week, then it started screaming, asked my local repair guy, he said that it was going to explode very shortly. Picked up an aftermarket at bobs cycle supply in pheonix
az., it has two wires for the lights, the original one has 7 i think, what do they all go to and do i need to have them all connected?https://classicgoldwings.com/forum/posting.php?mode=post&f=12&sid=1903bcbfbc75c15eee1cdd35e9cfdf38#
thanks in advance
bill

I believe that you will also find that the speedo is electronically hooked into the turn signal canceling circuit.

it would be nice if that worked, i would like to get an original if i could find it, (hint hint) but did not have it with me when i was at bob's cycle, any takers let me know.
thanks
bill

I think some one on here had the same problem and it was just the cable. Disconnect it at the front wheel and pull the cable out of the sheath. Clean it up real good and then relube it. Some one else will probably jump in with some more info.

when it was making all the noise i felt the back of the speedo where cable connects, it was hotter than it should have been. I lubed up the cable, it got a little quiteier but still had the vibration.

There's a bushing the cable slides into in the speedo. When that thing is dry it will make all kinds of racket.

Shortly after I got my '83 with 80k miles it started to squeal. I removed the speedo and lubed it with a few drops of atf.
Been fine for 20k+ miles.

after i posted the first message i went back out disassembled as much on the back as i could, took out the speedo cable and lubed the you know what out of it, shot some graphite up into the bushing that was mentioned. Put it all back together took it for a ride. no more squeal or vibration. I guess i jumped the gun. Now i just have to sell the aftermarket that i bought.
Thank you all for the help
good riding

That's the way it goes sometimes Bill, I think we've all been there.
Just pass on the knowledge we get from the fine folks here to help the next guy keep his old beast on the road.
