I have been reading about FET or FH as an upgrade to our stock old SH model regulators and yet another type comes along and said to be a true ON/OFF for the stator windings.
Apparently the Mosfet (FH) type shunt as the older original type only more efficiently so they still shunt like the originals only better so they don't create as much heat and have better charging characteristics.
Now comes the SH775 series used by Polaris but don't let the "SH" designation fool you, it is a true series regulator that does not shunt to ground it basically turns off the stator.

I fail to see how you can turn off a stator with permanent magnets. Spin the magnets they will produce electricity.

Good point, we do have PM type..so maybe unnecessary for our bikes? just a good FET type is as good as it gets. But would it not create as much heat in the stator if it were not shunting to ground, maybe just breaking the circuit (not shunting) helps keep cooler.
 
i tink thats right Zman if i uderstand things right it should be like its connected to nothing like a alt. conversion is when stator left in ...if thats true it would be a upgrade in my book and one i want to make for hooch

Produces electricity but no flow path means no current. One of the reasons I am not impressed by the running AC voltage test for stators as it only identifies failed windings not failing windings. The running test with a good stator will give you an idea of the rotors magnetism but so will a full current test through the rr.
 
I am not reading anything that convinces me of this SH regulator being anything other than a modified shunt or a Mofset style controlled reg. any power that is shunted through the Mofset reg to ground is marginal as you only have to look at the heat sink mounting area to see it is not shunting heaps of power to ground.
