I used an alternator from a 1993 Geo Metro. Available at automotive parts store. Fits perfect and works just fine.

When do the stators pack up and leave? And is it because it shunts all available power to ground instead of having a more modern mosfet regulator/rectifier?
Reason I'm asking is because I have a motor with roughly 20000miles on it and wonder if there is something preventative I can do while it's still on the garage floor.

Since you are in the UK, that is where I purchased my 4" aluminum pulley from RDG Tools in the UK.
