You guys owe me a new keyboard!!! I just spit out my coffee all over the darn thing when I read that!!! I am an electrician for over 35 years and have had my wing since she was brand new... just wanted to share some of what I've found over the years.... (the jumping out the ignition idea...

    80 and 83 coils

for the key switch hookup and wiring Decision tree for ignition problems; Maybe these might help?? If I read the diagram right, you can power the entire ignition circuit (the oone that makes the engine run, from the accessory fuse on the main fuseblock as well... the TL1 & TL2 switch part...

    80 and 83 coils

Easiest way to jump it out is to hook a jumper to the positive battery terminal and then I am pretty sure if you clip it to the headlight fuse, you will be able to start bike without key... it should "backfeed the wiring and bypass the keyswitch... just remember to turn on the switch too, so...

    80 and 83 coils

Could be a bad key switch??? you could try "jumping it out with a few alligator clips and wires from the battery to the fuse block.... we would need a little more time to develop a diagram for you to use to try the jumping out of the key switch...

    80 and 83 coils

Adding to Tory's questions... When it quits, does it just die like someone shut off the key, or sputter and run rough and then die?? Also, after it dies, have you tried pulling off a spark plug wire and seeing if you have spark or not??? if you still have spark then it dies, then you might be...

    alternator conv PLUG

Beav, Unless you have a 60 Amp fuse handy that'll drop right into your fuse holder, the 50 should be OK... I think if you shot 50 amps into the batteries on our GL's they'd probably go off like a Russian "Toe Tapper" or a claymore.... (just kiddin' probably just boil out).. The ONLY reason for...

    alternator conv PLUG

OK, "B" is for the battery, usually a HEAVY gauge wire (as big as you can get) connected right up to the positive battery post (if you use a fuse on it, make sure the fuse rating is HIGHER than the rated output of the alternator, or you could wind up with a dead battery, the reason to use a...

    Headlight upgrade options

Uhhhh, I might be mistaken, but all the data I read on those two websites compared SEALED beam headlights to H4 Halogen (removable bulb) Reflectors... Sealed beam headlamps DO NOT have removable bulbs in the back of them henceforth the name "sealed beam"... As far as I know, the GL1100's ALL...

    Headlight upgrade options

HID upgrade about 35 bucks from eBay includes bulb and ballast... only down side is that you lose the high beam as the dual beam lamps won't fit into our existing headlight housings without hitting the fairing... I worked around that by using my driving lights (also HID upgraded) for my hi beams...

    forks

Here is the front fork data for the 1100's.... ... DO NOT remove the top caps without protection!!! The Fork Springs will "shoot" the cap into your face if you are not prepared for it!! I use a 2X4 with a notch cut out of it to accommodate the "hump" in the top caps and hold downward pressure...

    Engine ICE Coolant ???

The main reason to NOT use silicate containing antifreeze is that silicates are ABRASIVES and prematurely wear out our water pump seals..... no silicates in the formula will help the water pump seals last longer, and if you don't do the 50/50 mix, just go to the local supermarket and buy a...

    Difficult start, not starting

OK, Here's what I get from reading the diagnostics and procedures attempted: #1. You crank and get no life. #2. If it does try to run on it's own if you touch the throttle or choke, it dies. #3. The fuel in the tank is only 1.5 moths old and is about 1/2 full #4. You haven't pulled the hose...
