Anyone running something other than the stock '81 front master cylinder?

Also, do the two piston calipers bolt right up in place of the single if I wanted to change them out?

Thanks folks.

Kinda both ways here....I have an '82 with the '81 Master cylinder and '81 single piston calibers on '82 rotors. The MC is fine, but the '81 pads do not work correctly on the '82 rotors. The '81 pads are taller (deeper?) and they overlap the vents and ride high on the rotor which causes premature failure of the pads (+the vents make the pads click when spinning). I just received '82 rebuild kits for all of my original '82 dual piston calipers and will be rebuilding them. I am keeping the '81 MC because i do not have an '82 MC.

I used a different Master Cylinder because I found a brand new one on ebay that works on the 81. My old one was stating to leak and the reservoir was deteriorating.
Here is a link for the one that I got https://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FRONT-BR ... 19c3f1a174 (sorry I don't know how to make those small links)
I've had it for a year and a half and it works fine and the ebay guy was good to do business with.

I was actually considering that exact one. I cant justify spending $100 on a new one though when I can just rebuild the old one and replace the reservoir, which I ordered the parts to do. The only reason I was hesitant to do so was not liking the way the reservoir attaches to the body. I just don't trust that o-ring situation.

The original "O" ring has lasted almost 30 years and there is no real pressure in that area. Static or when the brake is applied. I think your rebuild will last fine. By the way almost any metric bike master will work if it's sized to operate two calipers of similar size. They all use 7/8 handle bars and the same size banjo fitting. I tested a KZ master on my 80 last year but a caliper also needed rebuilt so I found a deal on ebay for master, calipers and lines. I still have the original to rebuild.

I totally futzed with the front brake system on my '81:

Randakk (sportbike) master cylinder
Galfer Steel Braided lines
EBC Pro Lite Rotors and pads.

All I can say is WOW!

Well, Randakk's MC is $158.50
EBC's discs are $184 each (about)
..and I can't remember off hand what I paid for the Galfer lines; they aren't listed in the catalog, I had them make up a set to match the stock set-up.. I did that several years ago.

The Master Cylinder and SS lines are the best bang for the buck; an immediate 100% difference!
I did the EBC discs because of braking performance in the rain. That first "squeeze" can be an eye-opening experience when the stock discs are really wet
