Found out that the water pump in my '84 engine (in '82 GW) is shot. My '82 1100 has a new WP. The '82 front cover looks exactly like the '84...can I swap the whole '82 FC onto the '84, WP and all? BTW, I was able to take the '82 FC off without breaking big gasket so would be a very easy fix.

Thanks
Brian

i think it will work and it could be an upgrade.....but!!!! it might be the down fall also ....wiring should be just like bike and front nutruel switch and all might just plug and play  im a little clueless here as ive done nothing in this area on hooch yet ...nothing hook up in nutruel switch

Check to see if the other components match up. It may be just what you need but the neutral safety switch and fan switch and temp sensor may differ some. If you try it be sure the neutral safety switch is positioned correctly and no wires get pinched. Rear cover fits the 84 so there's a good chance the front cover will also.

Since both covers are off I'd just swap the good pump over. Easy deal and for sure they are the same.
+1 on swapping the pump. The 1100 and 1200 front covers have different part numbers, but I'm not sure what the differences are. I've heard the 1200 has a bigger oil pump??? Maybe the coolant bypass??? For sure the neutral/gear indicator switch.

no oil pump and water pump are same.... there drive ...both are driven by the clutch basket gear...is where the difference there is ...it geared to flow 11% more there ..that oil and water

Well I'm glad I asked because it saved me a big mess. Never thought about 1100 having coolant bypass, 1200 not. The portion of the bypass in the FC would not have been completely covered by the gasket so would have had coolant pouring out when I tried to refill the radiator.

1100 cover with coolant bypass hole

1200 cover with not coolant BP. I drew a line where the gasket would have sealed.

Good catch Steve.

Thanks all
Brian

not a deal breaker though. You could thread the hole and install a headless set screw with loctite to seal and secure it.

Switch pump like Dan said, one difference you can drain oil from the front on 1100's if memory serves me.

If you do go with swapping the pumps, it might not be a bad idea to replace the o rings, that is unless they aren't very old and flattened and there aren't any nicks in them.
This is one area I'd only want to have to do once, it's one of my least favorite jobs.

No kidding. Looks to me like they could just as easily have bolted the WP in from the front so you could change it without taking the FC off.

are you actually going to use the common sense card ..like it was on the table ...it like having fuel pump so easy to get at and then its no rebuildable....or a stator thats a major plastic and motor out nightmare to change....carbs you cant get to ..to adjust....or a oil widow no one can see .... :smilie_happy:

Finally got the 1200 front cover gasket and Oring kit and have everything back together. Test rides taken...appears to be no leaks. So I would say "case closed"on this one. :Egyptian:

Thanks for all the help and advise. :thanks:
