still getting familiar with my 82 Interstate. I notice the speedo/tach cluster seems to move, like its only attached by the key lock cylinder at the bottom center. The top of the cluster moves back can forth. Is this normal>?? Also, does the speedo cable just unscrew from the back or do you have to remove the speedo? I just heard some whinining noise starting, started suddenly. I read on forum to lube the speedo where cable attaches. THANKS

Item #3 in the attached photo is the piece that attaches to the triple tree and it is on either side of the ignition switch: one stud on either side so it does flex a bit if you hit a bump. If it flexes a lot, you may want to take a look at those mounting nuts to see if something has worked its way loose.

As far as the speedo cable, yep, just thread/unthread that knob...

Thanks for the drawing Brian, I will check it out. its not excessively loose but its not rigid either. Sounds like it may be as designed and is OK but will check the tightness

Best

The whirring could be a couple of things.. the Speedo gearbox itself or a dry cable in the sleeve.. is the Speedo needle bouncing? .. that may be the Speedo itself needing some lube

thanks for the message
no its odd but no jumping of the needle or stuttering of the odometer, and it started very suddenly. I don't have time to look at it this week but am doing a little investigating on the forum here.

the sound is only as the bike is moving and coming from the instrument area or front of bike

yes the cable housing unscrews from the speedometer. You'll need to disconnect the housing at the front wheel to remove the cable from the housing.
