When does one know when it is time to replace the water pump on an 1100?

I have the rad off and took the hose tube off the engine. It has the metal props. I can wiggle the blades from side to side a little.

I have no leaks on this bike.

If it is time to replace- is there a napa number? where does one look for a pump?

Thanks

Tough question , a little play is subjective but when I have seen others spring a leak they usually have plenty of play...steel blade type is a replacement so it might not be too old, they do have seal kits but those I think are for the Bakelite impellers.

Another source of very good pictures and "how to" is on the Goldwing Docs site. Look under DIY for 1100. I got my parts from Cyclemax. On a side note, while you have it all apart, this is a good time to install a neutral switch from an Aspencade 1100 if you don't already have one. This will give you the opportunity to have an LED readout for all gears instead of just neutral and overdrive.

Ride it until you see oil in the in the coolant reservoir.

When you do, don't just assume you have a bad head gasket.

Water pump Oring is most likely the culprit.

It is easier and much lower cost than changing out those head gaskets!

Really!!

I gotta disagree on this....IF the weep hole is not clogged or deliberately blocked you'll see coolant or oil leaking there before it gets bad enough for the two to mix.

Yeah I guess you're right! If my weep hole hadn't have been stopped up I wouldn't have gotten oil in my reservoir tank.

But I still stick by my message of not automatically blaming oil coolant mix on head gaskets

The water pump is a much cheaper alternative than rebuilding these old heads if they don't really need it.

Do yourself a favor and follow these steps from the GoldWing Docs site. It will answer all of your questions on the install except when to breath. 9 ft lbs
