1980 GL1100 - Problem Reassembling Forks

Gentlemen: I put apart the forks on my GL to replace the seals and now I am having hard time to reassemble them back.

Basically, I am not able to slide in the lower leg in the upper that. The bushing in the lower leg is to tight and does not let the other bushing slide in. I have applied force, a little bit of rubber hammer, ATF...nothing works.

Any recommendations? How is this supposed to be put back together?

It's been a while since I did this, but I think you need to take the ring out of the fork lower tube and the the upper tube slides in, then put the ringsame and seal in the lower tube.

Thank you. I tried to remove the bushing but no success. I may need to heat it up or cut it and order new ones
