New to forum here...restoring a 83 Interstate; All painatable parts (fenders, false tank, side covers and fairing off to paint)...did the electrical upgrades to stator wires, dogbone fuse, new fuseblock-went with spade connectors, brakes, master cylinder rebuilds, wheel bearing, everything, and alot of cleaning/greasing/etc.... refreshed engine and dropped back in, now the problem.

I am not getting anything in terms of power/lights at my cluster with key on? Starter button, nothing? My electrical diagram way too small for these eyes to see---i am thinking/hoping that since my fairing (and its related harness) is off at paint, the reason i'm not able to start (yes, i'm anxious) is because the harness that connects to fairing harness is hanging there unconnected.

Question-does this fairing harness need connecting for me to start bike? I just dont want to chase a phantom problem if that is the case? Thanks in advance for the help!!!

I'm almost positive fairing doesn't have to be connected.

See if you have 12v positive at the red regulator wire and going to the ignition.
Then key on you should have 12v pos on the black wire after ignition switch. Should help narrow the problem.

could be I guess but im thinking the instrument lights should work ...especially the oil light ....should be getting power to the keyswitch for sure ...with all the stuff you done already there might be something there too ....but there sould be power coming to keay switch ...red wire I think it is or hmmm my memory sucks ....and in the on position there sould be power in the black wire on the ignition switch ....should be able to check this with test 12 volt test light or meter nighmare device

Ok then from there the black in the fat key switch plug feeds the fuse panel. Should have hot on that.
Then check after all fuses, should have hot after them.

Maybe we have lost chassis earths due to a great job painting. I had a painter mate who detailed his alternator so well that it was insulated by paint and wouldn't charge.

Ansip---you are right on! Just found the "ground" issue, combination of engine paint and the traingluar upper brackets (also painted) that hold the ground wire from battery. ground down the paint on engine mount area and brackets and problem fixed. Thank you all for the help! Just found this site and will definitely be visiting more often as i'm sure that i'll have more issues as the re-assembly is underway. Waiting on more parts on order and the paint parts---
