Looking for thoughts on rebuilding/replacing transmission gear set and bearings. Bike has 102,500 miles on odometer that I know about. PO moved to Alaska bush, so can't contact him to get true mileage. Bike starts and runs good, but I don't want to be running down the road and have something seize up/break, etc.

I had a local cycle mechanic ride it and he said it seemed normal for an "old motorcycle." Given his age (younger than the bike), I didn't put a lot of credence in his opinion.

With the bike in gear, it will rock back and forth about 4", about the same as my 86 that has 29,000 miles on it.

Your thoughts?

Yea, these strait cut gears are clunky and whine seems normal as far as other Goldwings I have heard..seems OK to me.
By the way carb synchronization does wonder for rattles and giving a smooth operation.

4 inches sounds fine, pretty good actually.
I don't think there is much if anything to be gained by rebuilding but it's good idea to pull the rear wheel and check the splines for excessive wear.

The rear end gets cleaned, with a fresh coat of Moly-60 and new rear end lube each winter. Bike gets about 1-2000 miles each year, so the noise may be normal; it just seems louder than the 86.

Thanks for the reponses.
