1987 Interstate Stator Replacement

I have been looking at the procedure to replace the stator and regulator for my 1987 Goldwing. Steve Saunders indicates that the stator is under the timing belt covers on the 1986 and later - meaning that it does not require the engine to be removed (he also states this in the information and pictures he has posted.) Have also seen where people have indicated that the engine has to be removed. Would like to know which is the case.
I would try to replace myself if the stator can be changed from the front - have someone else if engine has to be removed as I do not have nice enclosed garage to do this work. Does anyone know for sure if the stator can be replaced from the front on this year Goldwing? Mine is still in storage and I can not look at it to check.

Don't know where they got that information from but all 4 cylinder Goldwings have the stator inside the rear cover and engine has to be pulled out to replace it.

Check your connection blocks before you pull the engine, don't know where the 87 is but on mine it is next to the battery

I think they may of been referring to a poorboy external alternator being at the front. Test the stator thoroughly before removing engine etc :yes:

Yup...the stator is in the same place it has been for years...behind the rear cover on the engine...engine removal is required to replace the stator, or do anything with the armature/rotor. :builder:

Or may have been referring to the ignition pickup coils. Those are on the front except for the 1984 model.

I guess my worse fears have been realized. Will need to schedule appointment. BUT, where do I find the testing procedure and what values should be obtained to determine if in fact the stator needs to be replaced. I am thinking that it is either bad or will be going bad as the connector started to burn up. I then cut it out and soldered the wires together direct.

Once upon a time it was in the Gallery (image 14325 ), but now it cannot be found.

It was posted in a thread that I started for my stator issue on my 1200 Standard. I think I have the image on my PC at home if Dan or one of the other Mods cannot determine why it is no longer visible in the gallery. Here is a youtube video that shows the process too:
