Im putting on my new fuel pump and have a few questions. It is an OEM pump. I discovered that a PO plugged the weep hole with blue silicone which allowed the crancase to be filled with a mixture of fuel and oil. I ran my finger inside on the cam and discovered very litle or no oil. Where does the fuel pump get its lubrication from and do I need to prelube this area, perhaps use some break in lube on the actuating shaft ? The entire area doesnt appear to have any lube in it.

That'll be tomorrow if I can get a camera in that area. Gauging by the ignorance of the blue silicone someone didnt know what they were doing. I really dont think they would they have put a seal in that area. Have you heard of anyone doing that before? I think they were just looking for an easy and cheap fix. Ill check on that tomarrow. Thanks

Chances are their tachometer seal was leaking on their right boot and they thought it was the fuel pump leaking because the oil drips out of the tach drive seal and drips down under the fuel pump.

I had this problem, but George threw some gasket sealer around there and problem solved.

I pulled the tach drive housing off the engine and found no oil, merely a smudge on the endof the cam. I didnt see any seal on the end of the cam but was interupted before I could inspect further. I'll do that today. I'm thinking I'll shoot some oil into the bearing area on that end of the cam for some pre lube before start up and run the engine without starting to allow the oil to circulate prior to start up. Any Ideas how long I should run it to allow the bearing etc. to recieve oil?

I'd put some grease on the cam and the gear drive then run it for 10-15 minutes.
That should be plenty of time for oil to get in there from the cam.

There is no direct oil squirt into that area.
I think it makes it's way in by run off from the rocker area, not a lot but it is enough for oil to leak out the tach cable if the Oring seal is bad.

I've got some Lucas breakin oil left over form a engine rebuild. I'll probably use that on the speedo drive gear and fuel pump area and use a syringe to inject some Delo in the am bearing area. Possibly going to take the valve cover off and inspect the head etc. Any ideas on an easy way to replace the speedo drive gear seal?

Can the speedo drive gear be removed? Does the seal have some kind of positive lock ring or spring holding it in or just pressure on the sides? I'm trying to gert her ready for a bike rally this sept. and still have to get the new springs and seals in the front shocks and the right muffler repaired. I've got two Harley slip on mufflers that probably after the rally I'll install. Possibly a visit to the muffler shop. thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help. I saw a site that has a seal replacement method that uses 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe to seat the seals in the tubes. Have you seen that one? I came across it while surfing If I remember and can/t remember if it was on this site.
