I decided to really clean up, flush out, and paint - or polish - the final drive for the '83. After cleaning both the outside and inside, I noticed roughness when I turned the pinion shaft. It also sounded nasty, so I decided to open it up.

The gears look great, and the bearings on the ring gear look and feel like new. After some friendly coaxing, I got the pinion gear out, and found some nasty bearing wear. One roller has started to disintegrate, and the race has a very rough area and signs of overheating.

There was very little gear oil in the housing, and this little bearing (the inner pinion) takes a lot of stress.

My challenge now is to find new seals, bearings and o-rings to rebuild this beast. :builder: :laptop:

Keep us updated with pics, part numbers and progress reports! :thanks:
Yeah especially if you come up with a source for that impossible to find o ring.

When I worked maintenance at a newspaper we had an O ring kit that was material on rolls like wire. You cut out whatever length you needed to make the ring the size you wanted the super glued the ends together.

Yeah especially if you come up with a source for that impossible to find o ring.

:nea: Ain't no sech thing....I have thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of o-rings, from toothpick sized up to prolly 13"-14" diameter, in many different thicknesses and compounds. O-rings, "D"-rings, lathe-cut(square), you name it. Steve, if you can get an accurate measurement of what you need, I'll look and see can I find one that will fit/work. I used an o-ring from a Mercedes transmission on my 1100 water pump, and various others for the front cover(coolant & oil passages). Of course, sourcing one locally is good too, but if we can determine one from a trans kit will work in a specific application....I could create a "database", and supply them for the price of a stamp.

According to the parts listings, the 3 o-rings in the final drive are:
Description, OEM Part Number, Size (Diameter x thickness, in milimeters)
Outer pinion retainer, #91353-463-005 O-ring, 57 x 4.3
Inner pinion retainer, #91354-463-003 O-ring, 60.5 x 2.4
Output shaft seal flange, #91355-463-003 O-ring, 100.5 x 2

The 4 bearings are:

Large ring gear, 91051-463-008 Bearing, CR-1457
Small ring gear, 91052-463-003 Bearing, 32907
Large pinion gear, 91061-463-004 Bearing, 30206C
Small pinion gear, 91062-415-003 Bearing, 30203C To F5023879,
Or 91062-415-013 Bearing, 30203C From F5023880

The search begins...

THIS place shows to have all of the o-rings and bearings listed in stock....don't know iffin they actually do or not, but they've got really good prices, compared to other places I looked.... :beg:

Just copy/paste the part numbers into the search box, and they all come up...nothing says "Not Available," or "Out of Stock".....
