I was just wondering if I could wire up my 83 ignition coils to the 76? The reason I ask is because ive been workin on the 83 and I cant get the clutch un seized and th frame is rotting out...well all n all the 76 is in way better condition. So I want the put the 83 on the back burner for down the road. The 76 needs a coil but I noticed it has point and the other dont how would that work or do I have to buy a whole new set? also what other parts would be compatible.

not much really tranfers ...in the ignition it was total change from points ... and the ohm are not the same factor ... check this guy stuff out hes got the best switch over stuff out there with the old ignitions .. his stuff is mostly inline four but oldwings are the same and the stuff is great

I have no clue what im lookin for and how whould the transition work wouldnt I have to change out t he cam because the points shaft and im just not understanding how it would wire up cause the points are gone

oh no he has stuff that will make several aftermarket coils work on your 1000 bike set up as in the right ballast resistors to put on to match the points set up you have .... you have the best ignition set up and cam already in your bike ..the 76 cams and carbs are the biigest of all oldwings ... 75 are slightly better in carbs han 76 not much though .... coils and wires are a weak point on 1000s but are also really easy to work on ... there is also the c5 ignition for 1000 that make it as good as any ignition out there .. better really c5 has proven to be about the best one can get in ignition from any bike or car ...the 1000 coil and the non replaceable wires and the resitor ends are the biggest weak spot in 1000s today the stuff is over 30yrs old and all seem to suffer from just not up to par but working with weak spark that causes and mimics all kinds of other problems carbs are difficult too to get up to par ... useally both are involved in poor running

If you want to stick with points just about any coils designed for points ignition bikes will work. They might need some sort of adapter to get them mounted.

See im good with machanical part im starting to get more into the wiring and obviously I have to now anyway. I can deal with simple set ups such as old kohler tractor motors then I jumped into theses bikes cause its something I want to learn. If you could just point out a few things for me it would be great. Whats a ballast resister. So I get the coil pack I need then get a ballast resister that maches my points what am I matching? I already have new condensers I would still need those for the upgrade right? And are those the only parts im upgrading I do know the points look good so im good on those
