I'm trying to bring a GL1000 back to life after it has been sitting for 9 years and have run into a problem with setting timing.

I managed to get the cover off the rear case to get to the rotor bolt, but there is something on the rear case that creates interference the prevents getting a wrench on the bolt. The item in question is some sort of a cast aluminum elbow with a big rubber cap on the end. I've tried various combination of wrenches (I'm waiting on a 12mm offset box from Ebay now) and sockets with the battery box removed and that elbow just prevents anything from getting a good bite on the bolt to turn the engine.

Is the offset box the trick? Does that elbow need to be removed to set timing? How?

Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

I use a short 12mm socket/ratchet on mine, with no problems. The item you describe as being in the way may be the vapor catch can. It can be removed...there is a 10mm bolt holding it to the frame. It's kinda hard to see, but it's down toward the lower/rear of the can. Other than that, I can't think of anything else back there that would be in the way...

Hey Murph! Welcome to the site from New Jersey! :clapping:

On a GL1000, don't you have a kick starter on the engine that can be used to turn it over?

yes there is a hand crank for the 75-77 yrs ..and it sould be in right tank cover ..if not id do this anyway1 take all plugs out ...2 take timing belt covers off and use crank bolt to turn motor ...it will be rather easy with plugs out ...or if you still want to use stator bolt again plugs out will make it much easier to do...i like to take timing belt covers off cause you can check belt timing too ....

An update:

The wrench won't be here for about a week and so I'll try one of the other methods suggested.

I guess it would be a good idea to pull the timing covers and look at the belts and turn the engine this way.

I'd use the kick start crank to rotate the engine for timing but have this problem. I can lay my hands on the crank, but cannot figure out where I'd plug it into the engine. Anyone want to give me another clue on where to look?

Thanks.

it sould be right there where the stator bolt is at arm looking thing that has a rubber plug in it when stock ...on the left side of bike in back by stator ...it a rachet type deal ...its drawback is it move the crank along at a brisk pace to stop it right
