I picked up a copy of Motorcycle Classics today. There is a piece on '68 Yamaha 250 that a guy restored. Sort of like your bike so might be of interest to you. :read:

Anxious to see how the shocks have held up. Don't remember reading that you have done anything to them yet, but I'm too lazy to re-read everything.

I solder the ends of stainless bicycle cables with regular plumbers solder but they are new cables which have no grease, rust or dirt on them. I think if you can get the cable strands clean enough they will solder.
