Well, mechanic said he needed at least a month since he had a few projects ahead of me. I guess this mechanic is certified and some people i have chatted with have nothing but good things to say, so being in a small town I guess I lucked out but we will have to see. Should be completed in a couple of weeks.

Well no list of parts to find is a good thing I guess. That'll be a fun around town ride.

I picked up a copy of Motorcycle Classics today. There is a piece on '68 Yamaha 250 that a guy restored. Sort of like your bike so might be of interest to you. :read:

Thanx, will check it out.
I did get to work on Mikey this weekend. Mechanic is almost done rebuilding engine.
Remember, this bike was a basket case but at least it was neatly stored inside since 1971. I have had to dig around online as not all the pieces are here, this is getting to be a little expensive !!
So far, new handle bar sits lower, new rear tire, new ignition, frame repainted and also had to order some new cables and such.

Wow this is looking pretty cool. That cluster looks pristine. Keep posting the pictures.
Anxious to see how the shocks have held up. Don't remember reading that you have done anything to them yet, but I'm too lazy to re-read everything.

oops, forgot to mention i rebuilt the front shocks and it was a real pain to do, so i hope they hold up. i have pics of the shock rebuild i think, so will post later.

Okay, I have a portion of the front brake cable that is starting to fray. I have tried soldering it and its not grabbing. Are these cables made of steel? Stainless? What type of flux and solder do I need to get to fix this?

From what I'm reading, looks like silver solder using acid flux

Yep. And neutralize the acid when finished.. Then grease well.

I often use the mig welder but that is pretty rough.

I solder the ends of stainless bicycle cables with regular plumbers solder but they are new cables which have no grease, rust or dirt on them. I think if you can get the cable strands clean enough they will solder.

I sandpapered the strand and then de-greased. no luck. I ordered some silver solder with acid flux, will see what happens.

WOW !! its almost been a year so here is an update on 'Mikey' . In Oct of 2017 i found a local mechanic who would rebuild the engine. He quoted me around $700. Each month i checked on the progress, he had mentioned it would only take around 2 months ( what a load of nonsense that was) . Almost a year later i finally said i was picking up my bike. Originally the quote included the engine installed and bike running. He informed me that the he had completed the rebuild but was going through a divorce and did not have time to complete the install.
I picked up the bike with all remaining parts and now "Mikey" sits in my garage waiting to be completed. I think i can complete it but will take some time. Will post pics soon.
In the meantime i just returned from NYC, went to watch some US Open tennis and also took a tour of NYC. along the route i spotted this bike, very nice. I also went to the 911 museum and saw the fireman motorcycle, believe its a 78 honda 750.

Finally, got Mikey running. This bike was a real challenge and i will never tackle another one like it. I was so excited to get it started, I had tools and crap everywhere. Anyway, I will have to finish a few things on it and then take it for a spin.
Here's the video. This bike was parked in 1970, due to the engine blowing. This is a 1967 Yamaha 180.
