I received a call from a mate that I hadn’t seen in 18-20 years and he told me that he had a 68 Ranchero that he was having problems with and could I help him. It turned out that the Ranchero has a really nice conversion to rh drive with aircon, power steer and a leatherette style black hard lid to cover the tray area. Unfortunately it had died on him and the mobile mechanic diagnosed a faulty ignition coil(?) and had the proceeded to change the ignition coil, the Pertronix ignition module and had finally reinstalled points and condenser to get it running again. Unfortunately they had used a resistor style coil (should of been a standard 12v coil) and it was hard starting and breaking down under load. I initially expected low ignition voltage (over the phone diagnostics) but discovered that the wrong coil had been used.
I also fixed the fuel sceen/filter leak on the carby by replacing it with a 1/8 bsp barb fitting.
He also told me that he still had his 76 Shovel that I had rebuilt the starter on 20years previously. It has had a full restore with only the frame and wheels still being original.
