Black Brake and Clutch Handles?

The '81 Standard we recently acquired has what appears to be black vinyl covered brake and clutch handles. My '82, (which was also a Standard originally) has straight aluminum handles. I also see on Ebay both black and aluminum handles for '81.

Was this an option back then to have the vinyl coated handles? I like it a lot and want to change them on my '82.

I dont recall the 1100 or 1200 with a coating, maybe you can use a tool handle dip to coat yours.

I don't think any of that era were oem coated, bare aluminum and color as I recall.

The seller is stating OEM '80-'81.

I'd say if we want to know for certain what Honda put on is to look for NOS in the original Honda packaging. Black could be right because the lever mounts are black.

Looking at early advertisement ads online for the gl1100 looks to me like they are black, my 1100 had 9K when I bought it and they looked a dark grey but it probably wasn't kept in the best conditions and years of exposure could have lightened the color, definitely had a color on it, wasn't plain aluminum.

The handles on this '81 are definitely covered in a very thin vinyl. It looks original and is much thinner than any plasticote dip I have seen.

Mine are black, (well they were until I put the hydraulic clutch on - now I have one black and one chrome) but they aren't dipped.
