All the recent threads about cam swaps has me wondering, and that isn't good. I am coming up on changing the timing belts and I happen to have some cams from a 1000 sitting around, so what are the benefits of swapping cam shafts, what year 1000 would be best in an 1100, and what else would I need to worry about?

75-77 cams will fit right in the 1100. 78-79 cams aren't as aggressive if memory serves. Only "worry" really isn't. The left cam will have the ignition drive pin so a 1000 c5 unit can be installed there.

ive actually done this switch brian .... it gave my 83 lots more low end torque ...that was good for the 83 with its gearing ...it also required a complete carb readjustment ...I had already ran with 75-77 cams in another 1100 bike ....and decided after a month I guess to go with early cams in it ... its the angry dresser and a nice bike if frame and all connected to it was up to par ....

your bike being an 1980 yr this mod would be like useless as the sweet spot in the cam and the gearing of the bike just dont match up good in my opinion ... early cams yes 75-77yr your bike and gearing would be somewhat like hooch and your bike would scream ... id be all for it then

Hey Dan now that you have the 1200 cams out. Have you checked if the part numbers match? Or if not is it possible they were in the wrong sides? Just curious about the big compression difference.

So it has been some time since I tore apart the 77 heads, and I may answer this question myself when I tear apart my 78 motor, but... by using the 1000 cams in a 1100 heads, what do I need to do with that iggy pin that sticks out the rear?

That pin is spinning away out in the open on mine right now.
I'm going to put the stock 1000 housing on just to cover it.

Would be a shame to cut it off since the early 1000 cams are getting very popular.

hmmmmmm...this has got me wondering....

:beg: Joe/Dan/Whomever - would I benefit from 75/77 cams in my '83 Aspencade?

I notice the lack of power only when pulling my trailer trying to stay with 1800's...Joe- you'd mentioned an increase in low end torque? That's JUST what I'm lookin' for :yahoo: But.....you said it "required a complete carb readjustment" Since I had Pistol Pete completely redo my carb rack, I've never been inside them. What, exactly, did you end up doing?
Is this something Brian will have to do? And me, if I do a cam swap?

Inquiring minds (and Navy Chiefs) need to know.....

the carb readjustmemt was with 78-79 1000 cams these cams will really bring some low end power to the table ...but I thought it was something the motor really dint like ...and didn't keep it but a month or so .....now the 75-77 1000 cams seem to work better in 1100s than they do in 1000s ...of all the mods ive done this was like instant success ...the motor just seemed to like the cam to bad at the time of the meet and greet the angry dresser was batteryless and carbless at the time .....I assure you john the angry dresser dose not bang and clang up the hill as the wings did at the meet did ....I did not relizes that my driveway was such a load testing device ...as I have actually work on my bikes if the didn't do good in my driveway ...but I was shocked at realizing how tough that test was on every ones bikes .....

john if you have early 75-77 cams .....you will best your bike in overall ride ability by 20% in my view and it will out perform almost any oldwings out there ... go for it ..ive done no mod that was so successful instantly and I doubt the carbs will do anything but work better ...with no adjustment ....low end grunt was better than stock cam as it was through out the entire rpm range ....this is not opinion its fact ....the angry dress could keep up with an 1800 no problem its done it several times ....dose it have the lowend pull of hooch no ..but its low end power aint bad and better than stock cam 1100s yes ...and it just gets better as the rpm range increases

Hmmmm......this is an interesting observation Joe. I now have to ask, did the Hooch bang or clang up the hill at anytime before the installation of the C5 iggy? We observed Hooch pull that hill like it was eating the gravel for lunch with the C5. :laptop:

Gerry I wil have to admit that the hooch mod itself dose play the biggest part here but before before the c5 it struggled to have the timing to do the hill as easy as it did with c5 ....it was a huge grain over dyna period ......with the weber on as it is now it eats the gravel breakfast lunch and dinner at the same time over the stock carbs you guys saw ....its amazing where this bike is going in pure power 100%of the time

I was thinking that this winter I was going to work on my gray ghost and drop about $500 dollars into it. The more I read about the C5, I think Paul will soon be getting some of my money, and if you all keep up with this single carb work, that might be the next thing to happen, so I have to say...

Would you all please STOP spending my money! :smilie_happy:

I am about to spend a lot already on other things and everyone keeps suggesting mods and more mods for the 1100. I guess that is the down side of attending OldWing get-together's

Anyone else have a set of 75/77 cams 'laying around' that they'd like to see go to good use?

Thanks, Brian, but no....Joe says 75/77, so that's what I gotta find....

Can't blame a guy for trying... :smilie_happy:

I just picked up a pair of 75' cams for $9.99 for the pair, and $12.00 shipping
