Interesting idea, wonder if it's been done already ? I've heard of variable lobe cams, not sure if it's the same thing.

Don't know.

I see a lot of cars nowdays with VVT (Variable Valve Timing) DOHC will use an electric solenoid to control oil pressure fed to a spring loaded clutch on the exhaust cam to move the camshfts position relative to the driven gear. While this may alter timing/overlap, it does nothing for duration. Same lobe in a different position. What's in this video will hold the valve open longer without the need for more lift, which is limited by other configurations. (coil spring bind, etc.) And it "is" a variable lobe. I'd assume this mechanism in the video is actuated via controlled oil pressure. :?: I thought it was kinda neat.

What a great idea , and I can see how that could really work , and make a world of difference in Power and how smooth an engine would run at about any RPM.

I see some severe durability issues with that particular design, tho it IS a prototype at this point. Also, longer duration can possibly bring the valve into contact with the piston is some instances. It's definitely a theory that deserves more research, but I'll bet the big OEMs won't touch it... :(
