New to site. This question probaby has been asked but. Bought a 1980 1100 interstate that has needed more TLC then first throught. Have changed all the fluids and emptied the fuel tank and put new fuel with some sea foam. It will start with the choke. But it will not idle. Have too keep giving it gas to keep it running once it warms up abit. I tried to drive it, stalled at every intersection and when I was going 100 kph when i was shifting gears.
Some posting i have seen lead me to believe i may have to tare apart my carb. I am hoping that is not the case. As my wife may not let me since it took me two years to rebuild my gl650 carbs. i am hoping i am just missing something and have to just adjust some thing.

:salute: Welcome to the site :hi:

Sad to say but it sounds like your idle jets are gummed up so you will have to take the carbs off

You can try shutting off the fuel and run the carbs out as much as possible then Run straight seafoam into them filling the bowls and let sit a day or two then try running it again. This time running it. Run it up to a higher rpm and chop the throttle and let it coast down a little the run the rpm up again. With the throttle chopped (closed) The engine is at it's highest vacuum so may pull the low speed jets clean. It's worth a try.

I`m with Bigandrew;Idle circuts gummed up.It`s obvious, cause the bike won`t idle but will run as soon as you get over idle and the vac, operated carbs start working. But if the idle circuts got that much trash in it then the rest won`t look good either.Yank em out, tear em down, clean em up!

I bought my bike 2 years ago, and had the exact same problem you do now. If I were in your shoes again, I'd bite the bullet and pull 'em. Go buy that $200 Randaak carb kit, and a cheap set of guitar strings from Walmart. You won't be able to pull the idle jets out of the 1980 carbs. Mine were clogged up pretty good. Carb cleaner and compressed air wouldn't clean them. I had to pour boiling water into the idle jets, and poke them clear with a .009" steel guitar string. You'll want to poke them pretty easy so as to not damage the jet. I don't know how big the jet is. The .009" string will fit through the jet, a .012" string will not, so it's pretty small.

The reason you'll want to go ahead and spend the money for the Radaak kit is in the long run, you won't save any money by purchasing the parts separately. I tried that, and ended up spending about $10-$15 more on the separate parts than the whole kit cost. Plus, if you have the entire kit, you should only have to pull them once. I ended up pulling mine 3 times just to put all the new parts on them. First the carb kits, then the air cutoffs, then some o-rings. The Randaak kit has all that, so you can do them all at once.

As for how to do it, here are links from this forum that are very good instructions on how to pull, then rebuild the carbs...don't forget the ice cream:

After you get the kit, just park your butt for a weekend, and have at it...pretty easy stuff. I used these instructions to overhaul my carbs, and the ol' bike runs like a sewing machine. Idles smooth at 900-950rpm.

need to do the carbs being a 1980 the small jets dont come out , unless you know how to take them out then there is a place in canada that has the replacements I used them all the time , I have rebuilt between 40-50 sets of carbs and i still have problems when done that being said if you have never done them before send them out to pistol petes they will come back perfect ! the cost is around $500 that is the down side , sorry !

Check out Dan's carby soak technique.
I have done that it dose work but the dam little holes in the small jet are very hard to get clean , if you have seen the jets that you can remove the ones that are hard to get out like the 80-late 82 most of the time i cant get them clean that way

Watch the first video under carburetors.
I do it almost the same way i use a drill & tap to remove them made up a machine screw with a flat washer and a nut works every time but sometimes the jets just too plugged up and i order new ones i have sonic cleaner but still sometimes have to get new ones

Welcome to CGW from Southern California! These carbs are actually fairly simple, but very precise adjustments and attention to detail are required.
late 82 and 83 had the low speed jets that come out like a normal jet should !

Hmm, the listing says GL1100 all years then down below it lists 82 and 83 GL.
Also 83 is screwed in, maybe 82 also so I'm wondering what's going on here since 80-81 are pressed in. :headscratch:

Have you gotten to the bottom of this?

I would prefer to replace jets on high mileage carbs.
They're a bit pricey but if they are good quality this could be an excellent source.

I rebuild them all the time if it has the true carbs that belong of the bike it goes this way 1980 to though 82 are pressed in. then in late 82 they went to the screw in type and of course the 83 are also screw in type , i only work on 75-83 goldwings , just so you get the correct ones here is the P/N KHS-47A035 friction slow speed , i thought they where only like $20 ?
