...I got my bike running today....and i have pretty much went by the book and other help....I am wanting to know...when it says turn your pilot screws 3 turns....is it 3 half turns..or 3 complete full turns....i can not get any different readings either way..my Rpm's do not flucate at any turns, i have sync my carbs....and it runs pretty good..EXCEPT.....it will sometimes lose 2 to 300 rpm's just setting there at idle..then it's not running so good....thanks for your support...Paul.

3 turns = six flats. If it makes no difference rpm wise you need to remove the crews and spray carb cleaner through until they clear. Then install screws to lightly seated position. Stop when a light touch of two fingers on the screwdriver feels resistance. Then back out to the correct setting. Start the motor and adjust each screw to the highest rpm possible. Resetting idle to 1000rpm each time. Adjust all carbs twice to be certain. All carb adjustments affect the other carbs.

...ok....now i have set my pilots.....but i am having some burps...little back cough..through some of my carbs back through the air filter.....hmmmm.... :Awe: ....so what may be causing this....it runs pretty good after warm up....but cold it does not want to idle good..or smooth...any suggestions.... :builder: ...still working on it.....

Possibly weak spark but I don't think that would explain spitting back into the carbs.

In order to spit back like that fire is happening when it shouldn't or a valve is open when it shouldn't be.

Valves adjusted too tight will allow the valve to be open longer than it should.

Ignition timing could be way off if the ignition advance is sticking.

As yet I'm not sure if leaking air cutoff diaphragms could cause this, I don't think so.

....i have new air cut off valves....and the vaccum advance is not sticking..or it's not when i was checking it.....i checked my valve clearance 2 times before trying to start it the first time,,,,making sure every thing was in time..the cam pulleys, with T1 and T2 on all cylinders, i have checked my compression on all four .....with all of them having 165 psi...... :head bang: ....so i am wondering now...how much vaccum pull should i have while i am sync. the carbs at idle....how many vacuum inches..2,3,4,5 or more....or does that not matter as long as there all equal....i am still thinking...carb problems somewhere.

at idle do you get any rpm change spraying carb cleaner on intake horn connections or vacuum lines?
Any rpm change spraying the linkage? No change = no leaks. Low vacuum may be stuck piston rings I think which should loosen with running. So the cure you seek may be 50 or so miles of riding.

That vacuum is very low, I'd be looking for the cause. Once corrected I bet everything else will straighten out.

Low vac can be caused by the throttle plates being open too far.
They can be open too far to maintain an idle with the idle speed screw.
What could be happening is the speed screw is opening the throttle plates too far to maintain an idle because the idle jets are partially blocked causing the engine to pull fuel from the primary jets.

Did you dry sync the carbs first? That is when you set the butterfly's with a small piece of wire (minimal size) at each butterfly before setting the carbs?

....well....i did it....i found the reason why i was having so much problem with the carbs.....would not run right...reading low vaccum at syn....pilots not adjusting out right...hmmm...yeah at this point i was... :head bang: ...I took the carbs back off.....and inspecting every little thing i could possibly look at...i found that the seals ( felt ) around the choke shafts were missing on 1 and 3.., or maybe i should say... i put a flash light shinning inside the port and could see lots of light coming through...so i spent the last 2 days making all new seals for all 4, ( i used soft leather) actually it was the handle grips covers with the leather string hanging from it. The holes were already there, perfect match..all i had to do was cut the outside...using the shaft through the hole...i just snipped the excess off around the shaft leaving about a 1/16 inch...then the fun part came putting them in......while i was this far...i went ahead and checked the carbs for any dirt , trash, but found nothing, they were still clean from the first time....so...i reset everything, pilots screws, bench sync the carbs....and after installation....it started up with 9 inches of vaccum....and now they have been synced...and she is running fine.....
