Joe - if I run new wires from the stator harness out, it isn't that far up to the top of the left saddlebag. I can run + and - right to the battery from there as well.

Dan - that'd work too! Might get more air there as well. In either case, I'll run new wiring, just to be safe.Since the regulator was only $15, it'll save money towards new Progressive springs for both ends....

At that price I should resell them!

If it's as good a mod as I've been reading; why not?

Having studied all the forums for relevant info, I decided to get this one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/300944868014?ss ... 1439.l2649

Given that it will put off more heat than the 30 year old stock one; I was thinking about mounting it in the air flow behind the left saddlebag. Does that seem reasonable?

Unfortunately John this is not a Mofset regulator, the Mofset regulators start with FH in their part number.... :(

Btw the red white wire on the solenoid is the wire from/to the r/r... using that wire and splicing into it would work....and keep the regulator in the airflow... it will help..

 Well......no WONDER it was so dang inexpensive....

This is more like what I should be thinking about...and priced accordingly....I guess I just need to decide if it's money well spent....

That is about what the kit has been selling for with the mosfet regulator. The whole kit used to run over $159 at one point. The price has actually come down a little.

Gerry - have you installed one?
No I haven't John. When I was having battery problems with my '81, I seriously looked into this mod. But then I swapped out the '81 engine for the '83 engine with a new AGM battery and my charging system has been working like a clock so I did not see the need to change it out yet.

When I swapped out the engines, I made sure that all of the connections were really clean, the R/R connectors were tight and soldered the yellow stator wires. I also have an analog voltmeter in my fairing that I added to keep an eye on my voltage and it sure is telltale when you need to add some RPM for charging! (Especially when stopped at redlights in summer traffic while the fan is running.)

That stator is from '83, the R/R is from '81 and with the cleaned up connections, I am real happy with performance! With that AGM battery, I get instant starts everytime!

I purchased a second hand one for $20 from a bike wrecker back in May. They are normally around $75 for a second hand one which may require some wiring/plug mods. I haven't installed it in the Rats Nest yet as the charging circuit is working too well but I had it on board in case of a fault while we were travelling around. When I get her home to Oz I will do the conversion with details posted. The ship is supposed to arrive in February with her.

Gerry-
I also have a new AGM battery, soldered stator wires and a volt meter in the dash.

I'm just looking for cost effective ways I can upgrade 30 year old technology to keep the bike as trouble free as it has been....

Here is a listing that should be ok on eBay. Item 111002573977
I would recommend emailing the seller and confirming that this is a Mofset regulator before purchasing even though it shows a part number of FH002 in the picture.
