I have a 1981 GL1100 and when I start it I pull the choke out and the bike starts and revs to about 3000rpms but the choke starts to return(close) on its own and the bike dies. Is this how the choke is suppose to work or am I doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the choke? Thanks John

Not sure on yours, but I had another bike that the choke had a friction collar that could be adjusted to set the "holding power" of the system. It was below the knob around the metal shaft the knob was pulling on, you screwed it clockwise to tighten. Like I said don't know about yours, just a thought.

Yep,
Look at the very base of the choke knobs shaft when it's pulled out and there is a round friction adjustment turn clockwise a bit to make it stay in place.
When you choke these wings it opens the throttle some so the choke cable is being pulled back off by a throttle return spring some.

On the 81 choke should lock with a 1/4 turn clockwise of the knob.Reverse that to unlock it.

Really... I have to take a look at mine to see if it did that. I know it had the friction knob that I could control the force required to return the choke knob to fully open the choke.

Same with me as i remember, :headscratch: don't remember about it locking, :nea: but it was never on very long. :hihihi:

Well I couldn't get it to do the 1/4 turn, but tried to add a little tension to make it stiffer and promptly broke it(old plastic ) so ordered a new one will install and go from there.

Par for the course. Should work much better, just like its supposed to. :smilie_happy:

Well I did get the new cable and got it installed. It works good buy boy is that old gal cold blooded. And a little touchy on pushing in the coke after started. But once warmed up runs nice. Maybe it just need a few miles on it. Nothing kills a good bike faster than sitting.

You are absolutely right these bikes need ridden. A few ounces of ATF in the fuel every other fill will get those carbs clean and keep them clean.

Yes that works well I do that to my VW trike and it seems to run good. I just have a few more issues to fix on this one so I can start riding it . I have drained the gas in this one and replaced it with 100% premium gas and 1 or ATF so I know that it will run even better once it is on the road.

My '82 is cold blooded too. Rarely does she start without choke, unless already run within the hour.

My previous 82 was not cold blooded but my 77 is. Unless we had a super cold air mass (rare even in winter) it never needed choke and would start quicker than you could pull your thumb off of the start button.
