I am getting ready to do some major maintenance on the "Money Pit" as the wife likes to call it, and one of the things I notice in the colder months is that the clutch slips a little. So, while I have the motor out, the clutch is going to be one of the things that gets replaced. The bike has 112K on the dial, so I would expect some slippage to start to show soon anyway.

I have a 78 motor in the garage also, and a few weeks ago I pulled the rear case off and I was surprised to find a practically brand new clutch in that motor. So the gears got to turning in my head. I see that the friction disks and clutch plates are different part numbers, and I haven't pulled the 1100 motor to compare them physically to the 1000 clutch, so I am wondering if anyone else has: can the parts from a 1000 clutch be used in an 1100 motor?

I haven't done it so I can't say for sure. But I've read that the 1200 clutch can be used in the 1100 if the baskets are exchanged. Part numbers can change with the choice of coating. Pull them both and compare. Might need to change baskets too in order to use the 1000 clutch. My vote is try it. Might be like stator and fit and function just fine.

This is why I like asking for opinions on a forum... I never gave switching the basket a thought until reading your post. That will certainly solve the issues if the 1000 parts don't fit the 1100 basket.

I do know this! You will not be able to change out the basket on either bike unless you pull the motor and split the cases, the duplex oil pump chain that is driven off the back of the clutch basket will make sure of that!

Does the case NEED to be split? 1200 motor has to come out, but you don't need to split cases to pull basket

Do you mean just to change the plates and disks? I was under the impression that the only thing that required the removal of the engine was changing the basket... that is if you really wanted to fight with working on the clutch with the cross member and kick stand there.

You are correct, to change out the basket, you must remove the engine, the rest of the clutch components can be changed out without engine removal if you want to fight with the center stand being in the way all the time.

Unless of course you have a bike lift that grips the wheels, which is exactly why mine went to a shop recently for the first time in it's life, the $375 it cost, (with me supplying all the parts) was way less than the $1000+ a lift like that can cost, for a one time use.
