hay, jode that melted epoxie is the spark units located under the shelter on the left side near the flasher units. Both units mounted back to back on the same bolt. At least that is where i had melted epoxy, under them on the frame. Went to the parts bike to replace them.

so thats might be the resistor or ballist for the ignition ....i wasnt sure where the ballist system is on the 80-81 ...except its not on the coil...i do know that the spark units dont interchange between 80-81 and 82-83 the plug ends are different ...i would think that the starter button wires followed it would lead to the spark units ...thanks bob i think that clears it up where the ballist is at maybe ....im going to figure this out as dont want to lead anybody wrong

hmmm yes maybe ...we need to figure this out ...i was under the impression that the ballist was built into spark units or pluse generator ...but im not sure as my memory is bad and lies alot :smilie_happy:

What say we go back a few posts and move them into new thread called "Ballast Resistors" and get everyone's input on the subject!

I can only speak to the fact that I have an '83 engine running with '81 coils, no visible resistor like the '82 coils have and my CDI and RR are not melting like I have seen so many times in other threads.

The funny thing is, the ones that melt are on units that do not have external ballast restistors (that we know of). By all rights, shouldn't my units have been toast by now?? (This is going to be fun!)

If anyone has ignition parts from 1100 bikes of various years. The pickups ignitors or whatever. Known bad parts. I'd be interested in getting them to open up if I can to see how they are made. Coils and ballast resistors are known and not needed.
