Been hearing about things like bearings, drive shafts, sensors, computers, axles, transmissions and other things going out early , what I am wondering is there a particular year these problems started? I asked that to a guy at the auto parts store and he seems to think parts got cheap in or about 97 but mentioned it all depends on what brand as well.
Any definitive answers on what, when which brands?
Truck/van shopping and I don't want a headache, leaning to fords F100,150,250

Back in the late 60's early 70's manufacturers were sending people to junk yard to find out what parts of the vehicles lasted and what had been changed. Generally speaking the Fords and imports last pretty well these days. A couple guys I work with got 300,000 miles each out of their fords.

Ford had the best 1/2 ton truck. In line 6 with 3 on the tree.
I love the old ford 6 with the 3 on the tree, I learned to drive in one, a Ford Falcon ..Finding vintage F100 or 250 in decent shape that is around 3K and has air conditioning is pretty tough, gotta have air i`m going to Texas, It seems allot of rust buckets out there would rather find a Ca. truck but may have to buy one in Tx...also seems trucks are pretty popular out there in Tx ,they bring a premium price but out here in So Cal gas and registration is so expensive folks seem to want to unload them.
I kinda like the diesel Fords or a a Dodge cummins 6 cylinder diesel but a little apprehensive not knowing the big diesels as I know my little VW diesel.
Really leaning towards pre 90`s with a preference for pre 70`s if I can get air in it but good deals are out there on 90-2000 models too.

So you're getting the hell out of Dodge eh? When, let's see if we can get a couple more rides in together before then.
It really is nice riding weather, been using the bike quit a bit. I plan on leaving for Hesperia around the first of the month or as soon as escrow allows, there I will stay till spring then move on to Tx, I have my Mom visiting till the end of the month so it may be difficult to get away anytime soon, I`ll definitely try.

I have also noticed that body panel rust seems to be more prevalent these days than it was in the 90's. Body rust pretty much destroyed a car in about 15 years in the 70's. The automakers changed that and cars started to last longer. New car sales went from every 15 years to every 20 to 25 years for some people. Now cars a breaking and rusting again. Hmm, what is the common denominator?

Think Ford P/U would be a good choice also , they hold up a lot better up here in New England for rust for sure ! Last new truck i purchased was a 2009 4x4 quad cab Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel , I traded my 2006 Cummins in for it , (needed 4x4) But should have never got rid of the 2006 , Had serious trouble with the DPF filter on the new 2009 Cummins ! It would Clog up ! This filter was like a Catalytic converter and would clog with soot, Then at and on the Freeway would all the Sudden Choke out and go into Regeneration mode @ 35 mph with throttle Floored ! Did this several times ! Almost got smashed into trying to get over , Drove it right back to the Dealer and joined a class action on Mycarlady .. POS , So i immediately jumped on Craiglist and found a 2000 GMC 1500 so i could sort this out ! well that was five years ago , and i fell in love with my first GMC work truck ! Never took my Cummins back and i have 291.000.00 miles on my GMC and it does not leak a drop , Still all Original . And my 2000 Dodge Dakota has 189.000.00 , miles , So if go Cummins stay Pre 2006

Texas am definitely truck country. Locally, I see more Dodge rigs than anything, as far as work vehicles. ANY of the big 3 sneezle trucks have good engines....the trick is finding a used truck that Joe-Bob hasn't put a programmer on, and tweeked it a wee bit too far. Engine wise, as long as Joe Bob hasn't messed with it, all 3 makes are good for many miles. All this assuming the dang thing has been maintained properly, of course.
See more external rust on Ferds and GMs than Dodges, but....I see more trashed interiors on Dodges. Seems Dodge put all their $$$ in the drivetrains, and left very little for decent interior quality.

Around here if a Dodge truck is 3 or more years old it already has rust holes. GM's lose paint in strips and seem to need a lot of transmission work.
