So this 1200 motor has a couple problems.
It made the Vegas meet and back (658 miles) without a hickup. In fact the power and smoothness along with the gearing, C5 ignition, and single carb make for great combinations.
It's the noises I need to dig into.

1. The cold clutch out noise. It's not normal and something isn't right.
2. It's got a rattle at idle like loose primary chain and carbs out of sync.

The motor has almost 170 compression so I want to save it.

I'm going to check the oil pressure with a gauge before pulling it from the frame for a better idea condition of the main bearings.
I may split the case either way to check the primary chain and tensioner as well as clean the oil pickup screen.

Thoughts on these noises?
Before I start in I'll get some good audio.

Well supposedly the 1200 primary chain is bigger and the tensioner of a better design, up until I had this clutch basket out I thought it too was bigger than the 1100 clutch but it's the same size so I won't know if that's true of the chain either until I get into it. 84 1200 anyway.

I've been considering putting the 1100 heads and early 1000 cams on at this time, sort of addicted to the nice torque I'm getting from it now, that mod would make it so much better.
Would be interesting also to see what effect that mod has on my current single carb setup in how it runs. I suspect jetting will need to be changed at least.

I should let you put this fuel injected engine in it - I'm not doing anything with it!
I might just do that if you'll take payments.

Cold oil pressure 55 at 3000 rpm.
Warm 45 at 3000, 10-15 lbs at 1000 rpm.
Not terrible compared to 2 1100 engines I tested that were 2-3 lbs warm idle but not great either.

nope not bad ... but i like to see steves motor go to a good home ...i cant think of anyone who dose as good and thural work as steve .. by gosh he figures it out ..no matter what ... in the years ive been on the forums ive never seen anyone breeze though a FI 1200 like steve did ...no one ... hes top dog
