Does your 1200 whine?

Mine does. I know that some whine is normal, but after acquiring, doing a resto-mod and now having put some serious miles on a '78 GL1000, I really notice the 1200's whine now.

I know there's a lot of rotating mass and moving parts whirling away down there and I don't expect silence, but it sure makes more noise than the 1000.

Other than that, it runs like a "scalded dawg". I have no complaints in the performance department. Did 275 miles on Saturday on the '78 and about 150 today on the '84 Aspencade.

Did I mention that the weather in southern Arizona has been spectacular lately? (As in 80'sF for a couple of weeks).

I don't recall any whine but it's been a long winter here. Might want to check the driveshaft splines and final drive.

Might be worth doing a video so we can hear it?
Too tight belts can whine too.

And belt tensioners

i agree with dam after getting belts on a 1200 ..it sort of hard not to over tighten belts ...as on a 1200 they auite hard and you are easyally fooled into tensioning them to tight ...not saying that the problem ..but i confess ive done it myself ... you should look to belts as dan posted as maybe just a bit to much tension on belts as cause very easy fix ...to loosen ever so slightly from there to perfect tension ...hope this is it ..i think it is

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I had not thought about the timing belts/idlers. Last time I was in there was doing the Poorboy a few years ago. If that's it, I'll be relieved, since "external" noises are a lot better to stomach than "internal" ones...

...if you know what I mean.

(Thanks again. I'll be doing exploratory surgery here pretty soon - and will report back for closure (hopefully) of the thread).

Didn't realise that you have an external alternator. I would remove the belt and run the engine without the alternator bearings adding to your possible culprits list

Ah good point there.
I heard a lot of whine from the external when I had it on.
