Eating oil

Gerry beat me to it, check your crankcase ventilation system, you should use a breather hose to the air filter, pod will work but doesn't get any assistance from the intake suction, best to run a hose to the air filter, pods get clogged fast when venting oil gasses.

Well, I don't have intake air box since single carb mod. Air filter just sits inside the shelter/false-tank.
The pod filter was dry when I touched it yesterday.

I thought if there is any oil in the exhaust system the motor is burning oil.

Is this for my posting below?

I saw some oil/dust mixture around exhaust headers but hard to imagine that accounts for a quart or even a pint of oil..

If so, I think it is more likely that the oil came from cylinder head cover gasket.

Hard to tell either oil is in exhaust system or not unless you cut open the muffler.

I get a few seconds of blue exhaust on start up but it clears right away. I'm okay with that. 88k on the clock and still counting.

=/ cut open the muffler....!?
Okay I thought you meant inside, like at the rear tip of the exhaust. Have you given the bottom and all oily areas a good cleaning, I may have missed that detail?

Have you checked your coolant reservoir?

I was getting engine oil in the coolant, but no coolant in the engine oil....

Good point! I'd forgotten that possibility. However if quarts of oil are disappearing that bottle should be overflowing rather obviously.

Compression numbers are good. Worn or sticking oil rings or worn valve guides do not affect compression readings.

Left side is running lean and electrodes are corroded. Right side is burning richer than left (fuel or oil, can't tell from picture).

I'd try the ATF suggestion for a couple tanks of fuel and see if the oil usage lessens. If not, I'd look at the right side valve guide seals.

Take your pod off and blow through it, gasses will coat the other side , I would just soak it in dawn or other soapy cleaner to be sure.

No clogged POD filter.
I dumped it in soapy water but the water remained fairly clear.
Just a bit of dust, I think..

I was getting engine oil in the coolant, but no coolant in the engine oil....

Looked at it today.
No change in coolant level. It was at the top level line same as the last I checked (couple hundred miles ago).
It is difficult to see the surface without removing the reservoir (unlike your case where the level increased) but I don't think oil is mixed in.
I dipped a piece of wire and smelled the coolant but no oil smell.

So the mystery continues..

A mystery indeed! Perhaps a Gremlin is sneaking in yer garage and stealing oil for his Corvette?

The inside of the header pipes?
No, I haven't checked that.

When the drain plug was leaking, I saw a coat of oil all over the oil pan.
I cleaned it up along with other areas like front side of the engine around oil filter housing etc. then tightened drain plug as much as I could and put RTV silicone around it.
That was right before the 357 mile trip.
After the trip, the cleaned areas remain clean.

Today I put around 20 oz of ATF in the crankcase, idled the engine for 20 minutes, then changed the oil.
Also installed oversize drain plug. Now I can tighten it all the way to the spec 28 foot-pound.

If the consumption won't improve within a couple hundred miles, I guess I need to do that top-end rebuild.

Or maybe my engine is morphing into a 2 stroke. :hihihi:

How did the oil look? Did it feel gritty? If you still have it check to see if sediment settled in the morning.

It looked normal to me..
I dumped it in the recycle container when I went to the auto parts store to buy oil and oversize drain plug.
Didn't think about checking the used oil.
