You need metal impellers as you can't press off a bakerlite one without breaking it.

Am i correct in thinking that the front engine cover needs to come off to remove the pump?

Although either the bake lite or the metal impeller water pumps will interchange and work within any of the flat four Gl engines the internal parts of the water pumps will not interchange with each other. I made a tutorial on rebuilding the metal impeller pumps and there is one revision that needs to be added, there is no need to remove the metal impeller from the shaft to facilitate replacing the internal circlip when rebuilding the pump, it is not needed and was only there because it was needed on the original build at the factory due to robotic assembly. the circlip on the rear portion of the shaft is still needed and should be used. I would not recommend rebuilding a bake lite impeller pump due to nearly invisible stress cracks that are found on the underside of the vanes and they generally end up breaking apart.
