Phase one painting is done on half of the engine. The top and front are finished down to the heads. Next up, sides and back cover. I am real happy with the color and the Duplicolor High Heat clear looks great! With this color, the chrome bolts accent real nice (now that you can see them through the contrast in color). I always thought it kind of a waste to have the chrome bolts on a silver engine. The chrome bolts always seemed to disappear in the silver (IMHO). This pic is a little convoluted since the flash has changed the color a bit, but it shows the chrome bolt heads nicely! Final pics will be out in natural light where you will be able to see it normally. The bolts on the water pump cover were not chrome (surprisingly) and with all of the chrome bolts left over from the '81 engine, I cannot believe that I do not have two chrome bolts the correct length for the cover.

BTW.....painting tip for the chrome bolts.....a little dab of vaseline and paint away! The paint rubs right off with the vaseline afterwards!

It's looking great Gerry!

How did you keep from painting the chrome heads?
See the tip in the post before yours....... :hihihi:

I'm glad I did the mock-up engine first! I learned that the carb tops needed to be polished and the coolant cross over tubes and elbows needed to be the darker paint. I also learned that I do not need to repaint the carbs, just clean them up. When installed, you really don't see them anyway.....

(Quick look at the mock-up.....)

Thought I would update the thread with the new engine color with some close up pics. I am real happy with the color!! I think the polished aluminium, chrome and black accents really pull through with the contrasting color.

But everything clashes with that blue on the tire!!!! :smilie_happy:

Are the calipers the same as the engine? Looks great Gerry!
Yes, the calipers are the same as the engine! Yes, the tire letters are still blue! When I get done work I find that riding the old girl is more fun than washing off the tire! :hihihi:

(It is on my list to get done soon. :whip: )
