What do the new gas additives do to keep your tank from rusting? When you add products like ATF does it help? I see that Stabil makes a two stroke version but I don't know how or if that product works. Are there other additives that should be used?
 
I have heard alcohol absorbs moisture and that moisture (water) settles to the bottom of the tank where it can rust.

Since our fuel pickup is on the bottom I would think most if not all that water would be sucked out but water could get caught in a tiny recess?

I haven't read of any tank rust throughs on our bikes, even those that have sat empty for many years. Damn rare anyway so I think it's a non issue, so far.
 
To get rid of water add some methylated spirits to your fuel, that binds with the water and allows it to be burnt with the fuel.
 
So far has not hurt the gl1100.

I read somwhere for 2 stroke engines (or any engine) to use gas e-10 or e-15 one gets a clear can and put the gas in. ADD a quart of plain water to the gas. Shake it. Siphon the water out of the can (water will be at the bottom of the can). You can see the water line/gas line as you siphon it out.

The water will pull the e-15 water out. You end up with pure gasoline without the water or gasahol.
A pita to do but it does keep these engines and rubber parts running a little longer with less damage to them.

nothing.use atf or mmo or stabil. Any will help get the water out of the fuel.

Maybe...maybe not. The main fuel pick-up does not sit all the way on the bottom of the tank...but the Reserve pickup does. So, in theory, if you rarely ever use the Reserve, the water will stay on the bottom, and not get sucked out to be burned with the fuel. Of course, while riding, the fuel/water mix, so you should be able to keep separation to a minimum.
Water in tank doesn't ALL come from using ethanol blended fuels, either...a lot of it actually comes out of the underground tanks at the gas station. Those tanks are not air-tight, and water will seep into them...even the stores that sell a lot of fuel will still have some water in the storage tanks.

I'm with Ansimp, in using something that will keep the water suspended in the fuel is the best idea. ATF will certainly keep the tank from rusting as quickly, but...water will still separate from ATF, and settle underneath the ATF....unless you ride a lot...which is the BEST idea of all. :good:

Would you really want to put denatured alcohol in your gas tank? I think this stuff is grain alcohol with an additive so if you drink it you vomit. So ethanol is alcohol made from corn in the US and it is hydroscopic-( attracts water) I think that alcohol made from corn would to the same. I don't think we are talking the same product.
 
I should of clarified this process is only used before you know that you will be using your vehicle for a long trip and burning up the tank of fuel that has been treated fairy quickly
