every year i get amazed at how well a real fireplace works.... one that is untouched by regulation and codes .....my house has a fireplace that santa clause could come down to a point that is ...there is no flue liner squeezing the exhaust down to a soot clogging diameter and taking the heat right out the house with no transfer of heat ....

my fireplace is in the middle of the house and thirty ft tall and when burning it heats the entire chimney ....tons and tons of heat collection .....waking up this morning to the toasty warm house its easy to see how independent i am on such a huge need .....my point is that building codes and laws make it illegal to build a wood burning heat system that actually works and is efficient they just wont allow it ......even the ash system on my fireplace is maintenance free totally ....the only thing i haven't hook up yet is fresh air draw ....still working that out in my head....paying thousands for gas and maintenance is only a memory that cant hurt anymore.....i do cut a lot of wood but i'm sure that my fireplace is so much more efficient than any other source of heat available to me and never goes out due to storms and such

nice and warm

You have the heat source my wife has been wanting for years. I agree it is the most comfortable and least affected by weather and power fluctuations. However I really don't want to mess with carrying in wood and bugs and hauling out the ashes. Since my father rebuilt this house over 30 years ago and eliminated the chimney it would be a major expense to add a fireplace. Then there is the need for wood which is selling for $60 a pickup truck load around here.
I am happy for you that you are able to heat your home in such a comfortable way. I'm still hoping to get a Franklin stove installed here some day.

Regulations are in place to protect you from yourself, as your protectors vote themselves another raise. "We're from the government and we're here to help you."

In our neck of the woods, it's been dipping into the freezing overnight. When I go to work between 7:30-8:00 am the dew is frozen on the cars and grass. It's in the low 40's by then. We've been reaching highs in the upper 50's - low 60's. But the wind is what makes it feel cold. We don't have a fireplace. My wife and kids keep telling me to fire up the heater. I say "bull!" they can get up and put some clothes on.

But when I walk outside in the crisp night air and smell other people burning oak in their fireplaces, I feel warm and fuzzy all over. It's a pleasant aroma that fills the night.

My dad always said, "If you're cold, it's because you're not working hard enough" . I'll never amount to the workaholic he was. My kids will probably remember me for saying, "if you're cold, it's because you're burning the gas bill in your cell phones".

While I grew up we always had a fireplace, my kids haven't had that pleasure.

I admit, we are spoiled and lazy.
Our setback thermostat has 4 programs per day. All but the "Day" one are set for 71 degrees. And our forced air does a good job of heating evenly every room of the house.

I've had a fireplace in most of the places I've lived, and I love the smell, and the cracklin of a good, toasty fire. I haven't been able to use ours here in the past couple of years, tho. I can't seem to get the energy to climb up on the roof, and trim back the tree branches from around the chimney. :lazy: The one we have now has an electric fan to help move the heat out into the room, which I like, except it's too dang noisy.
In the low 40s here this mornin....bbbbbrrrrrrrrr!!!!

hmmm i've been at this for so long i never even think about the cost of wood ...... :headscratch: i guess when you have more trees as neighbors than people there are some advantages.....i actually enjoy cutting and splitting wood to a point but it can get old but right now the wife is getting the wood ....she so much more tougher than i am right its not even funny :fiddle: but i'm on my way back ...

The city limits stop at the fence line of our property. What this means is I live in the rural county and not the city. That being said, I have a few freedoms my neighboors don't, I can target practice with my guns, raise chickens if I wanted and PEE off my back porch. I love the smell of wood smoke. While I don't have a fireplace in our house (previous owner removed both of them), I have a wood stove in the garage waiting for me to finish my "warm room" for me to work on my babies. I have a 4 car detached garage that I'm planning on enclosing 1 bay to work in this winter. I already have an air conditioner installed for the summer. I was hoping to have it finished by now, but ended up spending my time replacing the windows and insulating my utility room to help with my fuel bill this winter. I heat with Propane (pain) to the tune of about 3K a year plus with the wife being out of work for the past 16 mo, (she started a new job 2 weeks ago, YEAH!) I figured I'd better get the utility room finished. I've been looking hard at stove pipe lately and hopefully I can get back to working on my work room in the next few weeks.

My Dad has thousands of dollars wrapped up in chain saws, wood splitters, trailers and wood stoves just so he can "save" a few dollars on his gas bill in the winter! He keeps it so hot in his house that you can hardly breathe. He get pissed if you open the windows and doors to cool it down. Many times I've walked in and it would be 90 degrees inside and Dad will be on the couch covered up with a blanket asleep! The house stinks of wood smoke and you have to change your cloths after visiting because of it. My Mom hates it, but Dad will not listen to anyone. We thought that maybe he'd give it up after he caught a couch on fire while putting wood on the fire...but nope, he has not. :head bang:
I'll never burn wood as long as I have gas and electric! It isn't worth the money and effort to me.

:hi:AHHHH !!! the smell of a good campfire....I have had a fire place for over 40 years... used to burn-up several cords of wood in the winter and some in the summer (just to have the old fried there in the house.)....Have cut tons of wood ever since i was a kid....Regulations are such here that i now have to consult the the news paper or TV to find out if i can light it up...SOOOO I just go out in the back yard where i have 2 old truck tire rims stacked and light a campfire...they are not covered by the contrls :whistling: :whistling: :whistling: Bob

yeah my location and house is just setup right for wood heating ....never smoky and not dirty ....i know what you mean though CBH i go over to others houses and see and smell the choked up stoves trying to breath .....toy that sounds ridicules about the laws your put under :nea:
