Regarding your immediate plans for that fine flat 6...I saw that you mentioned an immediate need for changing the timing belts. I lurk around over on the VRCC forum (Valkyrie) and it seems that the urgency for changing belts on the Valk is far, far less than on the four cylinder Goldwing. There have been several heated debates over there about it. None there can cite a single case of belt failure on the Valkyrie. In fact, Honda recommends an "inspection" at 100,000 miles! Not even replacement! Guys over there ridicule anyone who feels it necessary to change belts as early as 50k. Supposedly, the material is much improved over the older ones.

Maybe so, but I plan on doing mine somewhere between 50 and 60k miles.

So, tires are one thing, but apparently, timing belts may not be as urgent as you think.

Standard timing belt change for me would be 100k klms (60k miles) on any of my other timing belt vehicles which has been quite a few as Subaru started using belts in 85 and only went back to timing chains after 2010. My main concern was the age of the timing belts and the disaster if they failed. Don't get me wrong as I often wonder if 20 year old parts are better than their new replacements with today's current quality products? I have the original documentation with my new Valkyrie it makes for some interesting reading: Water pump replaced at 40k klms, attempt to inspect timing belts at 55k klms ( not done due to scared to snap cover bolts ( wtf) and at 78k klms remove cover and inspect belts for engine noise. At 91k klms it received a new driveline/shaft yoke and steering head bearings.
I noticed where the owners manual suggests the inspection of timing belts at 160k klms and I believe that should read as time for the replacement of timing belts. In my case the dealer was inspecting ( trying to? ) more frequently the timing belts.
I really appreciate all your input especially from another sites perspective :thanks:
I will not be joining any more forums ( trying my best) as CGW is number one with AFF ( Australian Ford Forums) and VJMC ( Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club ) running a distant 2nd and 3rd.

Welcome to the "Gold Wing with hair on its chest" club! If you ever desire 1800cc performance you should consider joining the single carb club (or single blower club) to get a 50% power boost. This is my "City" Valkyrie as it doesn't have any storage to speak of but I do give into creature comfort with the windscreen.

I like the smooth application of all that power through 6 cv carbs otherwise I am sure I would be having a few more traction issues. ATM with the worn rear tire I figured I should be able to cane it while cornering as there is still lots of tread on the edges of the tire, so far I have managed a few power slides  :smilie_happy:

As you now know once you get a taste of that opposed engine performance it's hard to settle for less. The 1800 is an amazing engine and It has a great transmission. The straight cut gears of the Valkyrie are great for the long miles but they do take some getting used to.

Someday..........someday.......

Rode it to work again today even though I keep claiming that I don't want to ride it too much before new belts and Tires. I am starting to get some action on the outside edges of the tires as there is plenty of rubber there still. Chicken strips are no more than a 1/2" atm but it does get a bit slippery when applying all that power through a corner. I really shouldn't take it for a good twisty ride until at least some new rubber

Stock or not, probably the most satisfying motorcycle I've ever owned.

I won't even mention breaking an upper shock mount bolt - not the bike's fault. Taking it where adventure/tourers should be used. A better two-wheeled travelling companion I've never had.

Happy customer. (I don't think I've ever spoken with someone who regretted acquiring a 1st Gen Valk).
