'83 GL1100 interstate, 66k miles, stored poorly for two years. I bent a valve trying to re-awaken this motor. Got a new valve and put it in, a somewhat scary endeavor due to the high cost of a new valve and this is my first try at it. The new intake valve went in ok but when I tested with kerosene, the exhaust valve leaked. So I pulled that out and cleaned it up and now I'm trying to lap that one and I don't know how well I'm doing. The pics show the old exhaust valve with about 10 minutes of lapping completed. The question is , How am I doing? almost there or just getting started. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated 'cause I'm new to this job.

I'll take it all apart again to clean the head and gasket surfaces.

this will be more fun when someone gets hurt!

Google valve lapping and there are some good how-to's out there. The one thing I learned was to spin it a few times and lift. When you lift the valve off the seat it pulls fresh grit back into the compound due to its sticky nature. Spin spin lift, spin spin lift. It's good when it doesn't leak.

+1
That is why there are grooves occurring without spreading fresh grit

Thanks guys, I'll go back and spin & lift some more to see how far I can get. It seems this could take awhile.
Better get some good tunes going Sure am glad this is not a 4 valve head!!!
