OK I am back. Sorry for the delay. But I will add that my parts donor bike is an '81 Interstate and I swear it has an on board air compressor behind the fork neck, above the timing belts, behind the radiator, under the shelter area.
Maybe I am wrong but I will try and get some pics of it posted here tonight when I get home...

That thing was a pain to photograph. It's tucked behind the radiator right above the cooling fan motor. Don't know how it's controlled.

Looks like a crusty old air horn!
I'm curious, too...does it have any air lines on it?

I keep checking this thread at work! Seems to me I remember the poly air lines but that was last summer. Tonight I will try and get a better look from the right side, that picture is of the left... problem is on the right, the pic showed nothing but the chrome spring on the radiator hose.
Updates later

Maybe it's the air pump for an old set of air horns? I've got a set of "trumpet" type horns that have a remote pump that looks similar to that. The pump has three(or 4?) nipples/outlets for the air hoses to go on....
Just throwing ideas out.

I think AApple nailed it. At the top of that picture I see what looks like a slotted mount similar to the air pumps I've used in the past.

Yep I think thats it. A better look tonight shows it's aftermarket.
First off, I was confused this morning, the first pic is from the right, this one is from the left. Had to light with a maglite and the camera set on macro with flash. The red circle is the positive terminal, the black is the ground, the green is the mounting bolt that goes through a hole drilled in the top of the heat shroud and the blue is the large 1/4" poly line from the pump and goes....
nowhere, cut off just past the frame tube at the left cylinder head area. The wires are both white with crimp on spade terminals.... definately aftermarket.

If you use an after market air compressor, you will have to install check valves in the air lines as the compressor valves are not strong enough to keep the air pressure from bleeding back through them, instead of staying in the shocks and forks.

Well it took a day but I got out in the garage-mahal and hooked this up to my lil 12V jumper box and it runs! At first noisey but when I felt for air out the hose it was pumping air flow, I capped the hose with my thumb to see it it built pressure and it quieted it down... must need a load.
Hmmmmm :headscratch:
