I'm not absolutely certain but I think they will need redrilled and I think the fender may need compressed a little. I think 79 forks are closer together than the 83 forks. Shouldn't be a lot of trouble though. Should be pretty close.

edit- I think the 79 fork brace is too low to allow the larger fender.
 
I was planning to got the reverse. I have a 1000 fender I want to put on my 80. I hope you find a way to get the look you want.

I was reading an ad on CL where a Guy put a Yamaha cruiser chrome shorty style front fender on his GL, looked really nice and hugged the tire perfectly..Damn..I cant remember the model Yam though.
Just be sure and use the steel ferrell`s if you cut or have to redrill, the plastic will break without them.
