ok heres what I know hauled my 78 GL1000 home fired it up drip drip drip it was a auction bike so I could not speak to owner but I was told $500 spent on carbs recently ok well IM addressing other issues and looking around at my new honey leak stops!!!! apporox ran on and off for half hour......dried rubber hoses? maybe we good.....saddle up go for a spin....Ive had a couple of short little rides .....and no leaks....runs really well actually....but gas smell you bet I smell like a gas jockey when I come inside.... yet no leaks its all dry..... I sprays cleaner and cleaned up the outside of the carbs and been in there with a mirror and cant see anything...... I'm stumped yes I shut off fuel when parked not a drop even sitting with fuel on..... only running choke on or off don't change anything...... if anyone can give me a likely place to look I would appreciate a starting point... thanks gang

Check the choke linkage. On the 1000 racks I've seen more than a few were locked up and only springs getting compressed. The actual linkage at the carbs were frozen very solidly.

Check the gas cap rubber seal, may be leaking or may have been drilled out by previous owner, replace if it has been drilled.. The vent hole is a one way and lets air in the tank not air/fumes out...Also take it out for a spin then park it and look down the plenum under the air filter, should be dry, use a flashlight and some tissue and see if it is wet inside the plenum, might be able to see with a light but tissue will absorb any moisture you cant see.
These bikes really just need ridden and when they sit for months can be finicky till they are worked out, I try and run my at least monthly to keep things moving.

If I overfill then park mine, expansion will make it give off a strong fuel odor. Once the level drops some it goes away.
Also there's a weird little crankcase breather canister that can get full and make for a nasty fuel smell if not drained.

plenum is dry after last run I checked all over EXPECTING to find a leak more Kleenex in my garage than a porn house floor!! where is this crankcase breather? like I said I'm a virgin!!! I guess I should grab a manual to find these things thanks for all the help I will do checklist today!! sprayed carb cleaner last night all over didn't wanna run it last night give that solvent a chance to dry.

thanks folks you people really are awesome!!

The breather on the 1100 is behind the clutch just above the swingarm pivot , not sure if the 1000 is the same place.
By the way I forgot to mention how to test the cap, the little hole on the bottom, you should not be able to blow through it, If put vacuum to it it should let air in not out, many times they just need a soak in wd40.
