I did some research and found some automotive fan swtiches that should fit the GL1100 - as an alternative to stock, aftermarket, or adjustable switch. The search criteria I used was as follows:
-Must have M16 x 1.5 threads
-Must have 2 wire leads (as opposed to a socket plug)
-Must normally be open
-Must close at over 210 degrees farenheit
Here are the switch part numbers, the temp at which they close:
*Wells SW740, 216F, $40; this one matches the stock temperature specification
*Wells SW1632, 217F, 37
*Wells SW528, 221F, $23
Just go to autozone.com and type in the part number in the search bar.
All you will need to do is replace the spade terminals on the wires with pin terminals and it will plug right in to the stock wiriing harness.
I have seen on a previous post how some folks are rebuilding the old ones with limited luck, and some that are retrofitting the plug socket on an automotive switch pin connectors- looks like a lot of work. I have also seen mixed results on the aftermarket ones. The switches listed above have a solid brass sensor and are therefore completely sealed off from the coolant. I will be ordering the SW740 and installing it this winter. I bet it will outlast the bike.
...or you could just buy an oem or aftermarket.
