If you are a motor/tech head like me, building a GL1100, most likely in time you'll end up (for some reason or another) looking for a good right hand switch, I've been all the way down this road and around the block before and spent $100's finding one that really works, and eventually I did, a couple of years ago.

Now I find myself with a headlight issue that could be the HID ballast, the bulb or the starter button. It's intermittant failure has had me scratching my head for weeks, so I buy a whole new HID kit but in the back of my mind, while it's on it's way from China is, is it the starter button?

Because when my non-motorcycling nieghbor was helping me troubleshoot he seemed to indicate that sometimes the light would cut out and return when I pressed the starter and sometimes not.

So the upshot of all this angst is this, (and believe me this bike fills me with angst, the closer it gets to being actually finished.)

I found a guy selling brand new right hand switches with 100% seller rating on ebay for $90, (and having in the meantime bought another total failure with a broken handlebar nipple and wasted yet another $30.) I thought I'd give him a try!

I eventually offered $80 and he took it, this badboy arrived today and the thing even smells brand new. So if you wanna save some money in the long run, here's a link if you're interested:-

But wait until this time tomorrow though, I shall certainly report on it's performance, whether it fixes my headlight or not, because I am also in receipt of all the stuff from China as well right now.

Okay that link worked but there's no pic of the inside. Is the start button 3 wire?

Yeah most likely, the little relay in the starter button has a hot with 2 options, light on, or starter on. that only takes 3 wires!

But I'll let you know if it worked! heads up tomorrow!!

The switch and the Chinese lighting parts work perfectly, I cannot blame a single component for the failure, (though my hunch is with the HID ballast).

Due to all this though, I am an extremely lucky man, I can now proclaim my 13 year project done, finished, completed.

There ain't anything else I can do to it now, its got every mod-con it can have and I can ride it just like the one I had in '84.

Seriously, thanks guys, without you and people like you, it never could have happened! :thanks: :thanks: :thanks:

If you are happy with it then it is complete. But there are other mods that can be done. Congratulations and enjoy the next ride season to the fullest.

Of course there will always be maintenance but that never ends.

Maybe next year, I might change out the head gaskets, (it smokes a little from the motor when it's warming up.)

But I am at a loss to know what other upgrades are available? I really thought I'd done them all.

If i've missed something that affects reliability, then I need to do it! What are they?

I will not do a paint job though, that "silver/black phantom bike" is exactly what I want.

Well to start there is the c5 ignition. The single carb mod. Could install early cams for more power. Those are the fairly easy ones possible. I don't know what all is on your list of things done.

Hmmm! I'll think about it, but for right now, my carbs, cams & coils run perfectly, thank you.

Meantime though, I'm also thankful you did not include a po'boy alternator conversion in you list!! :salute:

I don't really consider the poorboy an upgrade. To me it's a mod of choice dictated by reluctance to remove the motor or a desire to add on more electric contraptions. :whistling:

I don't consider an external alternator an upgrade, it's more an addon.
A true upgrade would be a way to increase the stator output, to say 500 watts.

I'd be interested in that mod!!!!
